Schwab wins 1-meter diving, exceeding national qualifier standard, as Golden Knights defeat Edinboro 154-71

Golden Knights take first-place in nine events in initial 2024 meet

The Gannon men's swimming and diving team opened its 2024 slate with a commanding 154-71 win over rival Edinboro on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. The Golden Knights improve to 2-2 in duals this season after they compiled nine first-place finishes against the Fighting Scots.

Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tenn./Home Life Academy) led the Golden Knight effort finishing first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:15.59) and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.53).

The men's first event win was the 200-medley relay from the quartet of Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), Josh Nel (Johannesburg, South Africa/American International), Connor Hebert (Damascus, Md./Damascus), and Will Moses (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) in 1:37.17. Ben Williams (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay) added Gannon's second win in the 200-freestyle touching the wall in 1:47.84.

Other individual event wins came from Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) in the 50 freestyle, Will Retsch (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) in the 200 IM, and Josh Nel (Johannesburg, South Africa/American International) in the 200 breaststroke. Decheck and Nel took part in two wins on the day, swimming a leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay as well.

Kollin Schwab (Erie, Pa./McDowell) won the 1-meter diving with a score of 300.7, which exceeds the National qualifying standard in diving of 287. To qualify for nationals, divers must make qualifying scores for 6 dives and 11 dives.

The Golden Knights return to action in a week's time on January 20, with a trip to Carisle, Pa. to compete in the Keystone Invitational. They will swim in the same facility that will be used for the PSAC Championships in February.
