Gannon women's basketball team set for its annual Free-Throw-A-Thon fundraiser on Sunday

The Golden Knights will shoot 100 free throws each in an effort to raise funds for the season-opening western trip

The Free-Throw-A-Thon, the Gannon University women's basketball program's annual fundraiser, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 10 a.m.

The event is part of Homecoming Weekend, and head coach Cleve Wright's team warmly invites alumni and the public to attend. There is no admission fee.

This year, the team is aiming to raise $35,000 to help fund its season-opening trip to Billings, Montana, to participate in the Division II CCA Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 3-5.

The team already has raised more than $10,000 toward that goal with 140 donors. The Golden Knights' goal is to secure at least 250 donations.

The Free-Throw-A-Thon is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at the Highmark Events Center, and the event should last until about noon. Each player will shoot 100 free throws. The team accepts donations based on how many free throws a particular player makes or one-time donations in a player's name. For those who can't attend, the Free-Throw-A-Thon will be streamed here on the PSAC Digital Network.

The public and alumni are then invited to stay for the team's open practice/scrimmage from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Last year, the Golden Knights' 14 players made 1,275 out of 1,400 free-throw attempts for a remarkable 91 percent. Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) led the team with 99 out of 100, including 98 in a row after missing her second attempt.

After the event, the team is open to challenges. Last year, Gannon assistant coach Brittany Batts was challenged by a donor to beat a player's total of 96 free throws. Batts then made 98 to secure that donation.

So, join the Gannon women's basketball team for a morning of fun on Homecoming Weekend and help the players raise funds for their western trip.
