Parrini Posts Top Five Finish to Lead Gannon to Third Place Showing at Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational

DAVIS, W.Va. – Freshman Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) paced a group of five Gannon golfers that finished under par with a fifth-place finish to lead the Gannon men's golf team to a third-place showing at the Dr. Wally Edgell Invitational.

A total of 15 teams and 90 golfers completed the second day of competition at the Canaan Valley Resort Golf Club. They were unable to finish their second round of 18 holes on Monday so returned to the course ib Tuesday to finish the second round before playing the final 18 holes on the par-72 layout.

As was the case on Monday, scores were extremely low, with the Univ. of Charleston (WV) running away with the team title with am 821 total, 43-under par. The Golden Eagles won by 12 strokes over second place Indiana (Pa.) after compiling a 275 total for the third round, the best score of the day. IUP finished at 833, 31-under par.

After a round second round that saw the Golden Knights post an aggregate of 276, just one stroke behind Charleston on the day. Gannon finished with an 841 total, 23-under pat. West Virginia Wesleyan and Fairmont State tied for fourth at 853 (-11).

IUP's Alex Swinnerton shot a 69 on Tuesday to edge Charleston's Rory Gorman and William Carestam for the individual crown. Sinnerton finished at 13-under 203, with the two Golden Eagles at 12-under 204.

Parrini, a native of Verolengo, Italy, emerged as Gannon's top finisher in fifth place. The freshman opened the tournament with a 68, and after wrapping up a second round of 70 on Tuesday, he returned to shoot another 68 for a 206 total, 10-under par.

Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) finished just outside the top ten in a tie for 11th place with a 209 total (-7). He finished with a 69 after rounds of 67 and 73. Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) and Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) finished a tie for 14th at 210 (-6). Dilorenzi matched Parrini for Gannon's best round of the day at 68.

Gannon will return to the links this weekend competing in the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Tournament on Sunday, September 24 and Monday, September 25. Allegheny College hosts the tournament at the Country Club of Meadville.
