Gannon Sweeps PSAC Major Postseason Awards in Women's Golf

Petersen, McClain, Stano claim top honors; five Gannon women's golfers earn All-PSAC selections

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference today released the 2022-23 All-PSAC Women's Golf Teams, with Gannon dominating the team as it has the PSAC Championship in recent years. After winning the PSAC Championship for an unprecedented fourth straight time the entire Gannon lineup earned All-PSAC honors, with the Golden Knights sweeping all three of the major awards for the second time in three years.

Head coach Scott Stano was selected as the PSAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year for the fifth time in the last seven years. Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole) was voted the Athlete of the Year and Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was accorded Freshman of the Year honors.

A Gannon golfer has now won Athlete of the Year honors the last three years, with Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) capturing the award in 2020-21 and 2021-22. The Golden Knights have claimed the Freshman of the Year award the last four years, with Petersen selected a year ago and White in 2020-21.

Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar), Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor), Petersen and White were all accorded first team All-PSAC honors, while McClain was named to the second team. It's the first time five golfers from the same team earned All-PSAC honors since California (Pa.) in 2010-11. Gannon has had four golfers recognized on three previous occasions, including last year.

Stano once again guided the Gannon linksters to an outstanding season. The Golden Knights won a PSAC-record fourth straight conference title by 34 strokes in a rain-shortened tournament that was called after 36 holes. The top three finishers and four of the top six were Golden Knights.

The Golden Knights would go on to finish 15th at the NCAA Division II East Regional. Gannon won six tournaments between the fall and spring campaigns. Stano was previously named the PSAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year in 2016-17, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21.

Petersen is a sophomore from Dianalund, Sweden who joined the Gannon program in January of 2022. She has been a standout ever since, now being named the Athlete of the Year after capturing Freshman of the Year honors last year. She was named to the All-PSAC first team for the second straight year after winning the PSAC individual title by six strokes over teammate Martinez with rounds of 78 and 73 for a 151 total.

In 26 rounds Petersen finished with a team-low scoring average of 78.81, with the 73 on day two of the PSAC Championships her low round of the year. She recorded 16 rounds in the 70's. Petersen won the Gannon Spring Invitational in addition to the PSAC crown and was in the top five in seven tournaments. She was Gannon's top finisher at the NCAA Division II East Regional.

McClain continued Gannon's run of outstanding freshmen as she is the fourth straight Golden Knight to earn PSAC Women's Golf Freshman of the Year honors, following Petersen, White and Maria Arenas (Bogota, Colombia). From nearby McDowell High School, she averaged 81.69 over 26 rounds with six top-ten finishes. She bolted out of the gates with a fourth-place showing at the Evann Parker Memorial, her first collegiate tournament. That was followed by a second-place finish at the Michael Corbett Fall Classic with a season-low 74. She fired ten rounds in the 70's. McClain came in 14th in her initial PSAC Championships.

White continues to add to her impressive resume'. The junior is a Mercyhurst Prep product and is now a three-time All-PSAC first team honoree in addition to two PSAC Athlete of the Year and a Freshman of the Year honor. She finished second to Petersen in scoring average at 79.85 over 26 rounds, with 13 rounds in the 70's.

White finished in the top ten in six tournaments, including medalist honors in the Evann Parker Memorial, Clarion Fall Classic and Mercyhurst Spring Invitational. She finished sixth at the PSAC Championships following a first place showing as a sophomore and third place as a freshman.

Maestro is now a two-time All-PSAC honoree, moving up from the second team a year ago. The native of Seville, Spain enjoyed a strong finish to the season and saves her best for the big tournaments. She finished in a tie for third in the PSAC Championships after a fifth-place showing last year. Her six top-ten showings featured second-place finishes at the Clarion Fall Invitational and Gannon Spring Invitational. Maestro finished with an 80.00 average over 26 rounds and carded a 70 in the Gannon Spring Invitational. That was the lowest round by a Golden Knight in 2022-23 and was one of her ten rounds in the 70's.

Martinez was Gannon's fourth first-team honoree. The sophomore from Tarragona, Spain posted an 81.35 average over 26 rounds with five top-ten finishes and nine rounds in the 70's. That included an impressive second-place showing in the PSAC Championship with rounds of 79 and 78. Two weeks earlier she had finished in a tie for third at the Mercyhurst Spring Invitational. She also took home third place at the Clarion Fall Invitational. Martinez is a first-time All-PSAC selection.
