Golden Knights in Fourth Place after First Day of NCAA Atlantic/East Regional

Shaunak Rama shoots 72, tied for fourth after day one

LEBANON, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team turned in a strong showing in day one of the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional at Iron Valley Golf Club in Lebanon, Pa. The top seed out of the Atlantic Region heading into the tournament, the Golden Knights finished with a 301 total, 13-over par, good for fourth place.

A total of 20 teams are competing in the regional, with the top three teams along with the top two individuals from the non-qualifying teams moving on to the NCAA Division II National Championships on May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio.

The leaders are tightly bunched, with Adelphi holding down the top spot with a 297 total (9-over par). Le Moyne is a stroke behind at 298 (+10), and Charleston (WV) third at 300 (+12).

Gannon is in search of its third straight trip to the NCAA Division II Championships. The 301 total is tied for the third-best round ever by the Golden Knights in the regional and the best since a 300 in 2019. The record would have gone down if not for a pair of bogeys and a double bogey on the 18th hole.

Donte Groppuso of St. Thomas Aquinas holds a stroke lead in the individual race with a 3-under par 69. Le Moyne's Tyler Birdd is second after shooting a 70 (-2), with four golfers tied for third with 71's.

Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa) led the Golden Knights with an even-par 72, good for a tie for seventh. The junior fired a 35 on the front nine, then came home with an up-and-down 37 on the back. Rama had four birdies, three on the par fives and three on the back nine, despite ending his day with back-to-back bogeys.

Freshman Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) is a stroke behind Rama at 73 with a 37 on the front nine and a 36 on the back. His round included birdies on the par five third hole and par five 16th. Delorenzi was two-under on the par fives. He is in a tie for tenth place. He won the individual title while playing the same course in the Atlantic/East Region Preview on April 24-25.

Abe Holmes (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie North Collegiate) and Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) are tied for 47th place after shooting 78. Holmes birdied the par five third hole, while Ruppert had a pair of birdies on the back nine, a three on the par four 11th hole and a four on the par five 13th. Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) rounds out the Gannon lineup with an 82.

The teams will return to the course on Friday for the second round before wrapping up the 54-hole tournament with 18 holes on Saturday.
