Women's golf team takes commanding 34-shot lead in PSAC Championships

Sophomore Ditte Petersen takes 6-stroke lead in individual race as Gannon holds 4 of the top 6 place

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Gannon women's golf team is well on its way to its fourth consecutive PSAC championship.

On a second consecutive day with tough weather conditions, the Golden Knights separated themselves from the field at the PSAC Championships at Berkleigh Golf Club. Gannon had a 10-stroke lead after the first round, and the Knights expanded that lead by 24 strokes on Saturday.

Led by individual leader Ditte Petersen (Dianalund, Denmark/Sorø Akademi Skole), Gannon shot an 18-over-par 306 and now has a 51-over 627 total through 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Second-place California (Pa.) is at 661, and West Chester is third at 672.

Petersen has been virtually immune from the brisk, wet weather conditions. After an opening-round 78 on Friday, she shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday to take a six-shot lead in the individual race.

The other good news for Gannon is that three of the next five golfers in the standings are Golden Knights. GU sophomore Andrea Martinez (Tarragona, Spain/Col·legi Vedruna Sagrat Cor) is in second place at 157. Ana Maestro (Seville, Spain/Albaydar) is tied for third at 159 and Sarah White (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) is sixth with 162.

Petersen was effective throughout her second round. She shot a 2-over 37 on the front line, featuring a birdie and three bogeys. She then shot a 1-under 36 on the back, including two birdies.

White was second among Gannon's golfer on Saturday with a 4-over 76. She carded three birdies on the back nine while recording an even-par 37.

Martinez was solid for the second straight day. She followed her first-round 79 with a 78 in the second round to move into second place. Martinez was consistent throughout the day in a round that was highlighted by a birdie on No. 8.

Maestro carded a 79 Saturday after shooting an 80 in the first round. She had three birdies in her round but was hurt by a triple bogey.

Freshman Zoey McClain (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (84-86-170) rounded out Gannon's lineup. She is tied for 14th in a field of 56.

A forecast of inclement weather looms over Sunday's final round. The PSAC will try to play at least nine holes and has scheduled a shotgun start for Sunday at 9 a.m. on the front nine.
