Freshman Delorenzi shoots 68 to take lead as Gannon moves into 2nd at Atlantic/East Region Preview

LEBANON, Pa. – Freshman Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) continued his fine spring season, and the Gannon University men's golf team moved into a tie for second place on the first day of the Atlantic/East Region Preview on Monday.

Delorenzi shot a 4-under-par 68 to take a three-shot lead among a talented field of 132 golfers. Meanwhile, Gannon endured a rough start, dropping to 11th place in the 25-team field before climbing into second place by the end of the 18-hole round. Gannon finished with a 13-over-par 301 total to tie with two other teams, two shots behind leader St. Thomas Aquinas (299).

Also scoring for Gannon were Abe Holmes (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie North Collegiate) (76), Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa) (78), and Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) (79). Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) added an 87.

Delorenzi scorched the back nine at Iron Valley Golf Club by sinking four birdies in six holes on his way to a 32. He shot a 36 on the front nine.

In March, Delorenzi turned in a third-place finish in the Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff in Wesley Chapel, Fla. His three-round totals included a 1-under 69 and 1-over 71. After that event, Delorenzi was named PSAC Golf Athlete of the Week.

Holmes struggled on the first hole, shooting a triple bogey 7. However, he recovered to shoot just 1-over-par on the final 17 holes.

Rama countered his 6-over 42 on the front nine by shooting an even-par 36 on the back. Ruppert shot 40-39 to overcome a triple bogey on No. 1 and double bogey on No. 10.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with 18 holes.
