Gannon Honors Five Seniors Before Salem Match

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's water polo team recognized five seniors on Senior Day prior to playing Salem on Sunday morning. The Golden Knights would drop a 14-9 decision to the Tigers at the Hallman Aquatics Center to wrap up play in the WWPA Conference Weekend. Gannon is now 5-14 and 0-3 in conference play.
 
The five seniors included Kate Baker (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Maddie Clark (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central), Kaylee Hatfield (Des Plaines, Ill./Elk Grove), Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Samantha Young.
 
In the pool Gannon saw Salem slowly pull away. The Tigers led 4-3 after one period and 8-5 at the half. Josie Frisina's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) goal early in the second period made it 5-4 but Salem ran off the next three goals before Kerstyn Farley (Belle Isle, Fla./Lake Nona) scored off a pass from Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) with just over a minute remaining.

Salem opened the third period with four straight goals to build Gannon's deficit to 12-5. Farley and Madeline Slater (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) scored before the period ended to cut the lead to 12-7. Molly Fehr's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) goal just over a minute into the fourth period made it 12-8, but the Tigers responded with two straight goals to pull away.  
 
Fehr led Gannon with two goals and an assist, while Farley and Slater also scored twice. Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) was in goal and finished with seven saves. Gannon held a slight 24-23 lead in shots.
 
Gannon returns to action in two weeks with another WWPA Conference Weekend. Salem will host the two-day event on Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16 in Morgantown, W.Va. Gannon faces McKendree and Mercyhurst on Saturday and Salem on Sunday.
