Velasco Scores Three Goals in Sunday Morning Loss to Salem

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Gannon women's water polo team wrapped up action in the second of two WWPA Conference Weekends on Sunday morning with a 14-7 loss to host Salem. The two-day event was held in Morgantown, W.V. at the Mylan Parks Aquatics Center.

The Golden Knights previously played twice on Saturday, suffering a 17-8 loss to McKendree before defeating crosstown-rival Mercyhurst 9-7. Gannon wraps up the regular season at 6-16 and 1-5 in WWPA action.

Gannon will now compete in the WWPA Championships on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29. McKendree is hosting the tournament in O'Fallon, Ill. at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
 
Salem 14, Gannon 7
Gannon and Salem were tied at 1-1 after one quarter, with Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) accounting for Gannon's goal midway through the period. Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) gave Gannon a 2-1 lead a minute into the second period, but Salem scored the next four goals before a power-play goal by Josie Frisina (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) closed the gap to 5-3 with 1:41 remaining. Salem would score two more goals before the end of the half for a 7-3 lead at intermission. Though the teams battled to a 3-3 stalemate in the third quarter, Gannon could never pull closer than four goals in the second half. Salem held a 23-16 advantage is shots and was more efficient at 60.9 shooting percentage to 41.2 percent. Velasco led the Golden Knights with three goals and an assist.
