Gannon Avenges Previous Loss to Mercyhurst with 9-7 Win on Saturday

Golden Knights split pair of games in WWPA Conference Weekend

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Gannon avenged a loss to Mercyhurst two weeks ago while playing in the first day of the WWPA Conference Weekend. Salem is hosting the second of back-to-back conference weekends in Morgantown, W.V. at the Mylan Parks Aquatics Center.

The day began with a 17-8 loss to McKendree, but Gannon entered the pool Saturday evening and defeated crosstown rival Mercyhurst 9-7. The Lakers had beaten the Golden Knights 12-8 two weeks ago.

The win over Mercyhurst snapped a four-game losing streak as Gannon improved to 6-15 and 1-4 in conference play. Gannon wraps up action Sunday morning playing Salem at 10:30 a.m.

McKendree 17, Gannon 8
Tied at 2-2 after one quarter, McKendree outscored Gannon 6-2 in the second quarter and the Golden Knights could never pull closer than three goals the rest of the way, that coming on Molly Fehr's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) goal less than 30 seconds into the third period. Gannon led 2-1 late in the first period on a Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) goal, but the Bearcats scored the next three goals to take the lead for good. Strickland led Gannon with two goals and two assists while Fehr contributed two goals and an assist. McKendree finished with a 32-29 advantage in shots but the Bearcats converted on 53.1 of their shots while Gannon came in at 27.6 percent.

Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored her lone goal of the contest to tie the match at 6-6 with 2:45 remaining in the third period and Gannon took the lead for good with a goal on Molly Fehr's (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) penalty shot with 1:18 left in the period. Josie Frisina (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) gave Gannon a two-goal cushion midway through the final period off a pass from Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington). The two reversed roles, with Velasco finding the back of the net off a pass from Frisina with 2:03 remaining for a 9-6 lead. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) paced the Golden Knights with two goals and three assists, while Frisina had two goals and an assist and Fehr a pair of goals. Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) went the whole way in goal, finishing with eight saves. Gannon held a slight 27-26 advantage in shots but held the Lakers to 26.9 percent shooting.
