Golden Knights Drop Pair in Bruno Classic to Open the Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Gannon women's water polo team opened the 2023 campaign with a pair of losses to Division I foes in the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University. The Golden Knights opened with a 16-6 setback to Siena, then this evening fell to La Salle 13-3. Both matches took place in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

Head coach Shane Unger knew he would need people to step up offensively with the departure of the team's top scorers. On Friday Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) accounted for four goals and an assist, while Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) scored twice. Both of McGarry's goals came in the opener against Siena. Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) split time in goal in both contests, with Klakeg playing the first half and Sebunia the second.

Gannon has to more matches on Saturday. They will take place at Harvard at the Blodgett Pool. The Golden Knights play Wagner at 10:10 a.m. followed by a 1:40 p.m. game against Marist.

Siena 16, Gannon 6
The Golden Knights opened the season with a 16-6 loss to Siena as the Saints got off to a fast start in their opener. They scored on six of their seven shots in the first quarter to go up 6-1 after one quarter. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill), who as on the WWPA All-Freshman Team last year, accounted for Gannon's first goal of the season. Sydney McGarry (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added a pair of goals in the second quarter, the first assisted by Rachel Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) and the second by Hannah Kownacki. Siena held a 9-3 advantage at the half and built the lead to 14-5 after three quarters. Katie Hatfield scored off a feed from Strickland and Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) scored her first goal of the year on the power play in the final minute. Freshman Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) took a pass from Madeline Slater (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) and found the net for her first career goal I the fourth quarter. Siena outshot Gannon 35-21 and had a .457 shooting percentage compared to Gannon's .286. Both teams had a pair of power play goals, Gannon on nine attempts and the Saints on five. Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) split time in goal, with Sebunia recording 11 saves in the second half.

La Salle 13, Gannon 3
The Explorers jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one quarter and expanded the advantage to 8-1 at the half. The Golden Knights would add a goal in the third and fourth quarters. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) accounted for all of Gannon's goals, with two coming on power plays. Rachel Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) and Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) were credited with assists.
