Fehr Tallies Eight Goals as Golden Knights Split Pair of Contests at Grove City Invitational

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Gannon women's water polo team earned a split of its two games in the Grove City Invitational on Saturday. Competing at the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool the Golden Knights opened the day with a 19-8 loss to Mount St. Mary's before handing Washington & Jefferson a 19-14 defeat in the nightcap. Gannon is now 2-8 on the season.
 
The Golden Knights return to competition at the Harvard Invitational on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5. They face Redlands and Wagner the first day and La Salle and Siena on day number two.  
  
MOUNT ST. MARY'S 19, GANNON 8
Mount St. Mary's scored the first three goals of the game but Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) made it 3-1 with a goal with 1:05 remaining in the first quarter. The Mountaineers answered with a pair of goals in the final minute for a 5-1 lead after eight minutes. They put seven goals on the board in the second quarter to grab a 12-4 advantage. They ended the day with an impressive 54.3 shooting percentage while out-shooting Gannon 35-27. Gannon had a 29.6 shooting percentage. Neither team could find the back of the net on the power play, with Gannon misfiring on all ten attempts and Mount St. Mary's 0-for-4. Fehr, a freshman, had a season-high four goals to lead Gannon. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added a pair of goals.

GANNON 19, WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON 14
This time it was the Golden Knights jumping out to the big lead after one quarter. Gannon grabbed a 6-1 lead and maintained an 11-7 edge at the half. W&J actually opened the scoring, but Gannon scored seven straight goals. Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) accounted for three of her four goals in the first quarter while jade Strickland had a goal and an assist. When Hanna Kownacki (Cypress, Texas/Bridgeland) scored early in the second quarter the lead grew to 7-1 before the Presidents mounted a rally. Washington & Jefferson closed to within four goals late in the match but Ellie Velasco (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) added an insurance goal for the final score. Gannon outshout W&J 42-27, but the Presidents were more efficient at a 51.9 shooting percentage to 45.2 percent. The Golden Knights held W&J without a goal on seven power play chances.
