Strickland, Fehr Lead Gannon to Win over Wittenberg

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's water polo team picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon while wrapping up action in the Robinette Invitational at the Hallman Aquatics Center. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored a season-high four goals and freshman Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) matched her high with three goals as the Golden Knights defeated Wittenberg 9-5. They are now 1-7 on the season.

Earlier in the day the Golden Knights dropped a 17-8 decision to Iona. A young team looking for some scoring punch continues to see improvement. The eight goals matched the season high set the day before and the nine vs. Wittenberg were a season-high.

The Golden Knights return to action on Saturday, February 25 playing in the Grove City Invitational. They face Mount St. Mary's at 1:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. return to the pool to face Washington & Jefferson.  

IONA 17, GANNON 8
Freshman Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) scored a season-high three goals along with an assist as Gannon continued to show an improved attack. Seven players took part in the scoring, with six different players finding the net. Unfortunately, Iona jumped out to a 6-3 lead and the Gaels built the lead to 10-4 at the half. Fehr opened the Gannon scoring with a goal less than two minutes into the match, assisted by Kate Baker (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Baker followed with her won goal to make it 3-2, and Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) scored her xx goal of the season to make it 4-3 late in the first quarter. The Gaels ran off the next six goals for a 10-3 lead. Iona ended with a 30-26 advantage in shots, but the Gaels shot 56.7 percent compared to Gannon's 30.8 percent. Iona was also efficient on the power play, converting 7-of-12 opportunities while Gannon was 3-of-9.

GANNON 9, WITTENBERG 5
The Golden Knights broke through with their first win of the season while notching a season-high nine goals. Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) (4 goals) and Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) (3) accounted for seven of the nine scores. The golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter. Strickland opened the scoring with a penalty shot and Fehr followed with her first goal, assisted by Maddie Slater. Rachel Kreidinger (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) and Strickland added goals later in the period. Fehr's second goal early in the second quarter gave the Golden Knights a 5-0 advantage and they led 6-2 at the half. Wittenberg scored the only two goals of the third quarter and pulled to within 6-5 with a goal early in the final eight minutes. Fehr scored on a power play at the 6:23 mark, and two minutes later Strickland scored off a feed from Fehr. Hanna Kownacki (Cypress, Texas/Bridgeland) scored an insurance goal with nine seconds left. Sydney Klakeg (Santa Barbara, Calif./Choate Rosemary Hall) played the first half in goal with four saves and Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) took over in the second half and had seven saves.
