ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University women's wrestling team will host the NCWWC Northeast Regional for the second straight year on Saturday, February 18. Wrestling will get underway at 10:00 a.m. in the Gannon Recreation and Wellness Center. A total of 11 teams will send wrestlers to the tournament, which serves as the qualifier for the 2023 National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships on March 3-4 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

NCWWC Region 1 logoThe Northeast Regional field bears a different look in 2023 with last year's champion, Tiffin, and second-place finisher Adrian now competing in the Northwest Regional.

In addition to Gannon, who comes in ranked 11th in the latest NWCA Team Tournament Rankings, the 11-team field includes No. 8 Lock Haven, No. 10 Sacred Heart, No. 15 New Jersey City, and No. 19 Ursinus, along with Alvernia, Cedar Crest, Delaware Valley, Elmira and Western New England.

There are a total of eight regionals taking place this weekend, with the top four finishers in each weight class at each regional qualifying for Nationals. Multiple wrestlers from a school can be entered in a weight class, with each team able to enter as many as 15 wrestlers total.

This marks the third year of the super regional concept to qualify for Nationals. A year ago, 12 teams competed in the Northeast Region, with Tiffin repeating as champion, followed by Adrian in second and Gannon third. Tiffin crowned two regional champions, Adrian had three, and Gannon had one. East Stroudsburg also had a pair of individual champions. Gannon qualified eight wrestlers for the 2022 NCWWC National Championships.

Gannon has enjoyed another highly-successful campaign under second-year head coach Breonnah Neal. The Golden Knights have done so with a young lineup that has battled injuries but hopefully healthy heading into the regional. They ended the year with an 8-4 record in duals and are ranked 11th in the latest NWCA NCAA Women's Wrestling Tournament Rankings. The Golden Knights turned in strong showings while competing in four tournaments, as well.

In addition to five ranked teams, the Northeast Regional field includes 13 nationally-ranked wrestlers and eight returning All-Americans. The Gannon lineup has three ranked wrestlers, led by Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) at 109 lbs. The sophomore is ranked fifth after earning All-American honors a year ago with a seventh-place showing.

Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) are ranked sixth and seventh, respectively, at 170 lbs. Gonzalez has returned to the mat after not competing since 2020-21. Helm is a two-time national qualifier who earned All-American honors as a freshman in 2019-20 with a fifth-place finish at 155 lbs.

Though not currently ranked, Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) has appeared in the 136 lb. rankings during the season and earned All-American honors in 2021 with an eighth-place showing at 130 lbs. Amara Devericks (San Clemente, Calif./Corona) is also a former All-American, finishing sixth at 170 lbs. in 2019-20 and seventh at 191 lbs. in 2020-21.

Neal has parlayed a strong recruiting class into four starters who look to make noise at their first regional tournament.

Gannon Wrestlers in 2023 NCWWC Northeast Regional

101 lbs.
Chloe Kitagawa (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (11-3, Fr.) – the freshman from California has held down the starting job all year and comes in with an 11-3 record. She took first place at the PA State Tournament and fared well at the NWCA National Duals.
109 lbs.
No. 5 Julianne Moccia (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) (15-6, So.) – after earning All-American honors as a freshman Moccia has enjoyed another strong campaign and comes in ranked fifth with a 15-6 record. She has a third place finish at the ESU Open to her credit along with finishing sixth at the Missouri Valley Open. Moccia ran off eight straight wins before a loss to fourth-ranked Kaelani Shufeldt of Lock Haven. The two are the likely favorites on Saturday.
116 lbs.
Brielle Larsen (Ogdensburg, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) (6-6, Jr.) – a transfer from King who joined the program in January, Larsen has come on of late, winning her last three matches. She has won three times by fall.
123 lbs.
Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) (15-12, Fr.) – another of the freshmen in the GU lineup. She has settled in at 123 lbs. after opening the year at 130 lbs. and briefly competing at 136 lbs. Bazemore took home second place at the PA State Tournament at 123 lbs. and came in fifth at the ESU Open while wrestling at 130 lbs.
130 lbs.
Nikoly Dos Santos (Matthews, N.C./Providence) (0-0, Sr.) and Juliana Cubias (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Aliso Niguel) (3-4, Jr.) – Gannon will enter both Dos Santos and Cubias. Dos Santos competed at 116 lbs. last year and earned a trip to the national championships with a second place showing. Cubias bumps up to 130 lbs. after posting a 3-4 record while competing at 123 lbs. in two tournaments.
136 lbs.
Lana Perez (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) (10-6, So.) and Ariana Gonzalez (Cypress, Calif./John F. Kennedy) (2-3, Jr.) – if healthy, Perez has the ability to earn her third trip to Nationals. The sophomore has a 10-6 record with seven falls and has been in-and-out of the national rankings this year. Perez was fourth at the Adrian Open.  She finished as the runner-up at last year's regional. In 2021 Perez was the regional champion at 130 lbs. and went on to earn All-American honors with an eighth-place finish. Gonzalez is a junior who is 2-3 and recently finished third at the PA State Tournament.
143 lbs.
Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) (20-9, Fr.) and Stephanie Floor (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Leone) (7-8, Gr.) – Ujfalvi, a freshman from Hungary, leads the Golden Knights in wins with a 20-9 record with seven falls and six technical falls. She has won her last four matches and nine of her last 10. The lone loss came to third-ranked Grace Stem of Lock Haven. Floor, a graduate student from American Samoa, is a seasoned wrestler with 40 career wins and three trips to Nationals. She comes in at 7-8 with five falls.
155 lbs.
Samira Stephens (Geismar, La./Dutchtown) (7-7, Fr.) – the freshman from Louisiana has recently taken over as the starter at 155 lbs. She was out for two months and competed at 170 lbs, prior to her return in the PA State Tournament in late January. She would take first place in that event. All of her wins have been by bonus points, with six falls and a technical fall.
170 lbs.
No. 6 Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) (16-7, Jr.) and No. 7 Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) (15-9, Jr.) – Gannon looks to make a lot of noise at 170 lbs. with two wrestlers in the national rankings. Both have seen time at 191 lbs., as well. Sixth-ranked Gonzalez, a junior who returned to the mat after last wrestling in the 2020-21 season, has been a revelation. She owns a 16-7 record with seven falls with a first-place showing at the PA State Tournament and a second-place finish to her credit at the ESU Open. Helm is also a junior and comes in ranked seventh with a 15-9 ledger with six falls and three technical falls. She was second at the PA State Tournament and third at the ESU Open. Helm has a 73-29 career record. A year ago, she suffered an injury in her opening match and was unable to compete the rest of the way. Helm is a two-time national qualifier who earned All-American honors as a freshman in 2019-20 with a fifth-place finish at 155 lbs.
191 lbs.
Amara Devericks (San Clemente, Calif./Corona) (0-0, Sr.) – the senior will hopefully make her season debut at 191 lbs. She is a two-time All-American, finishing sixth at 170 lbs. in 2019-20 and seventh at 191 lbs. in 2020-21. A year ago, she appeared well on her way to a third trip to Nationals before suffering a season-ending injury just before the Northeast Regional. She has a 44-16 career record.
