Nation Named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. --  Gannon's McKel Nation (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) has been named the PSAC West Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending December 3. The conference announced the weekly award winner on Monday afternoon.

A 6'2" senior post player, Nation helped the Golden Knights to improve to 9-1 with four wins over the last two weeks. (NOTE: The PSAC did not release weekly awards last week). The period began with wins over Walsh (64-34) and at D'Youville (70-59). Nation came up particularly big down the stretch against D'Youville. In the fourth quarter she rebounded a Sam Pirosko miss and was fouled on the followup. She proceeded to make the two free throws.

Nation then came up with a hustle rebound to set the stage for a final run. Gannon pulled away after leading just 64-59 with 1:17 left. That's when the Gannon defense took over. The Golden Knights forced two turnovers and blocked a shot after that. Nation had a steal and scored on a layup to make the margin 68-59 with just 19 seconds remaining. In 22 minutes she had nine points (3-of- 3 FGs, 3-of-3 FTs) and a team-high eight rebounds with two steals, two blocks and an assist. In the Walsh game she played 17 minutes and had six points, six rebounds, a block and a steal.

Gannon opened PSAC action this past weekend with a pair of wins thanks to a suffocating defense. Nation keyed a defense that allowed just 64 points in the two games as Gannon won at Bloomsburg 75-31 and at East Stroudsburg 65-33. She had 15 points in 21 minutes at Bloomsburg, making 7-of-9 field goals including her lone 3-point attempt. She added five rebounds, two blocks and a steal.

That was followed by six points (2-of-3 FGs, 2-of-2 FTs) and three rebounds with an assist, a block and three steals at East Stroudsburg.

In four games Nation totaled 22 rebounds (5.5 per game) with six blocks and seven steals. She also scored 36 points (9.0 per game) while averaging 18.5 minutes. In those four games Gannon held opponents to 39.3 ppg. while limiting the four opponents to 28.5 percent shooting (53-of-186). On offense was she 14-of-22 from the floor, 1-of-2 on 3-pointers and 7-of-7 at the line.
