Nicklas Scores Twice on Senior Day to Lead Golden Knights to 5-0 Win over IUP

Respecki adds a goal and two assists

ERIE, Pa. – Senior Logan Nicklas (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) scored two goals on Senior Day and freshman Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) had a goal and two assists as the Gannon women's soccer team concluded the 2023 regular season on Friday afternoon with an impressive showing against Indiana (Pa.) on Senior Day. The Golden Knights handed the Crimson Hawks a 5-0 loss at McConnell Family Stadium.

The victory gives the Golden Knights a 13-3-2 overall record and 13-2-1 ledger in PSAC West action heading into Monday's PSAC Quarterfinal game with Slippery Rock at McConnell family Stadium. IUP ends the season at 5-9-4 and 4-9-3 in conference play.

Gannon now faces Slippery Rock for a third time this season on Monday at 4:00 p.m. with the winner moving on to the PSAC Final Four. The Golden Knights come in as the number two seed out of the Western Division, earning the right host The Rock. Gannon defeated SRU 4-2 earlier in the season before the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie on Tuesday.

The Golden Knights held a 3-0 lead in the latter meeting with Slippery Rock but The Rock rallied with three goals in the second half. This time around they weren't about to squander a three-goal lead. Respecki opened the scoring with an unassisted goal, her 11th of the season at the 10:46 mark. She took a long pass along the right sideline, dribbled past a defender into the box and fired a shot past the goalkeeper.

Exactly twenty minutes later Gannon's lead grew to 2-0 thanks to the other half of Gannon's dynamic freshman tandem, Grace Emanuel (Erie, Pa./McDowell). She took a pass from Respecki on the right wing and found the upper right corner of the goal for her 11th goal of the season.

Nicklas, one of nine seniors honored in pre-game festivities, made it 3-0 64 seconds later with Respecki and Holly Gray (Gold Coast, Australia) assisting on the goal at 35:10. The play began with a free kick to Respecki, who found Gray on the left wing and Gray's pass found Nicklas in front of the goal.

Nicklas scored her second goal of the match in the 69th minute. She gathered in a loose ball to the left of the net and left-footed the ball into the goal to make it 4-0 for her fifth goal of the year.

Paige Taylor (Robina, Australia/Emmanuel College) gave Gannon a 5-0 lead on a powerful free kick into the near corner from the far left wing at 77:42. It was the junior's fourth goal of the season.

Gannon finished with a 23-3 advantage in shots and had seven corner kicks to one for IUP. Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley), one of nine seniors honored before the game, recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
