The Gannon men's swimming and diving team is coming off a season-opening victory and will face a major early season test when it visits the Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-0 when it defeated Clarion 155-145 on Oct. 20 at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool. Meanwhile, RIT has opened the season with back-to-back victories.

Gannon claimed the win against Clarion when the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys'), Ben Williams (Findlay, Ohio/Findlay), Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), and Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) emerged with a meet-closing victory in a pool-record time of 3:07.45.

McCallum led Gannon with three wins as he also finished first in the 100 freestyle (46.40) and 200 freestyle (1:43.53).

Junior Aidar Sataev (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan/Forest Hill) was another swimmer with multiple wins for Gannon. He touched first in 100 breaststroke (57.76) and 200 breaststroke (2:08.02).

Gannon also received wins from sophomore Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tenn./Home Life Academy) in the 500 free (4:49.56) and junior Ryan Barclay (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:13.16).

RIT has earned lopsided wins in each of its first two competitions. The Tigers downed Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 199-95 on Oct. 14 before routing Alfred 227-73 on Oct. 21.

"I'm excited for our second meet," Gannon coach Jacqueline Michalski said. "We're thankful to RIT for hosting us again. It's a been a great tradition in past years, as Mike and Debbie Mills (parents of swimmer Lexi Mills) host us for dinner afterward. It's always a great team event that creates memories that last a lifetime."

RIT defeated Gannon 172-128 on Nov. 5, 2022, at Rochester.

McCallum had two of Gannon's five wins in that meet as he finished first in the 100 freestyle (46.88) and the 200 free (1:44.04). Andrew Beyer (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) won the 200 backstroke (1:55.51), Will Retsch (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) placed first in the 400 individual medley (4:13.83), and Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tenn./Home Life Academy) was triumphant in the 500 free (4:44.29).

After the trip to Rochester, Gannon will turn its attention to the Magnus Cup in Nov. 17-19 at Cleveland State University.

"This meet will gear us up for our big midseason event, the Magnus Cup, which will hopefully set us up for success in the conference," Michalski said.
