Gannon Repeats as Elwell Invitational Champion

Four Golden Knights finish in a tie for third

ERIE, Pa. – There's no question that longtime Gannon Director of Athletics and golf coach Howard "Bud" Elwell would be proud of how the men's golf team performed in the tournament named in his memory.

The Gannon men's golf team repeated as champions of the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational at the conclusion of the 36-hole event at Whispering Woods Golf Club on Monday. In fact, the Gannon A team came away with the team crown while the Gannon B team edged Millersville for second place in the 11-team field.

The Gannon A team combined for a 293 total on Monday after opening with a 295 on Sunday. The 293 was three shots better than Ohio Dominican and Mercyhurst for the low total of the day as the teams battled chilly and damp conditions. The 588 two-day total (+12) was 12 strokes better than the Gannon B team (298-302 = 600). Millersville finished two strokes back at 602.

The tournament ended up being a tribute to Gannon's depth and youth. The Golden Knights had four golfers tie for third place in the individual race, with three on the A team and one on the B team. Seven of Gannon's ten golfers finished in the top 20 of the 59-man field, with three of them freshmen and two sophomores.

Ohio Dominican's Yadhu Urs led after the first 18 holes but found himself trailing throughout much of the day. He rallied to finish a 69 on Monday to win by four strokes at 4-under par.  Urs opened with a 71 and had a 140 total as the only golfer under par. It was a bit of redemption for Urs after he finished in a tie for first place last year after the opening round. The second round was canceled and Urs lost on a scorecard playoff.

At one point Mercyhurst's Evan Rowane held a three-stroke lead. He fell behind late in the match but surged at the end to edge the four Gannon golfers for second place. He matched Urs' 69 for a 144 (E) total.

Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena), Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo), Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) and Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) all tied for third place at 1-over par 145. Delorenzi, a sophomore, and Parrini, a freshman, had identical 74-71 rounds. Both had five birdies on Monday's round of 1-under 71. Parrini recently won the Guy & Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Invitational.

The other two Golden Knights at 145 were also freshmen. Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) finished the two days with rounds of 73 and 72 while competing for the A team. His consistent round on Monday featured 13 pars and three birdies as the Gannon A team had 16 birdies on the day.

Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)) competed for the B team and added a 73 to his opening round 72. The freshman had five birdies on the day, including four on the back nine as he came in with a 34.

Another highlight of the day for the B team came from Dylan Flinchbaugh (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown). The sophomore had an eagle 3 on the 519-yard, par-5 third hole on his way to a 77. He tied for 12th with a 151 total, shooting a 74 on Sunday.

After posting the sweep over the last four days with first place finishes in both the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational and the Elwell Invitational, head coach Dustin
Coleman's team has now won four of five tournaments this fall. Just one tournament remains for the fall portion of the schedule, but that's the crown jewel.

Gannon will compete in the PSAC Championships on Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22 in search of a first-ever conference crown. The 54-hole event will be played at the Iron Valley Country Club in Lebanon, Pa. A year ago Gannon finished second to Indiana (Pa.).
