Gannon in First Place After First Day at the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team took a big step towards repeating as the champion of the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational following the opening round of competition. Gannon is hosting the 36-hole event at Whispering Woods Golf Club.

The only question is which Gannon team will win. The Gannon A team holds a three-stroke lead over the Gannon B team after 18 holes. Both teams battled gusting winds to hold down the top two spots among the field of 11 teams. The Gannon A team finished with a 295 total, 7-over par. The Gannon B team sits at +10 298.
Millersville and West Virginia Wesleyan are seven strokes out of the lead at 302 (+14). Ohio Dominican is in fifth place at 309 (+21).

A total of 59 golfers teed off on Sunday. Ohio Dominican's Yadhu Urs holds down the top spot after shooting a one-under par 71. Freshman Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)), playing for the Gannon B team, is a stroke behind at even-par 72. Westfall shot even-par 36's on both team, with a par and bogey on each nine.

Meanwhile another freshman, Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area), stands atop the leaderboard for the A team and is in a three-way tie for third after firing a 73 (+1). Wolak played a very clean round with 15 pars. He had a pair of bogeys while birdieing the par-5 third hole.

Five other Gannon golfers are in the top ten. Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville), Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) and Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) are all tied for sixth at 74 (+2) while playing on the A team. Dylan Flinchbaugh (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) is also in the group at 74 while playing for the B team. Parrini is also a freshman.

The teams will wrap up play at Whispering Woods on Monday with Gannon looking for its fourth title in the last five years in the tournament named after the former Gannon director of athletics and golf coach.
