Golden Knights Roar Back From Ten Strokes Down to Win Mercyhurst Fall Invitational for Third Straight Year

NORTH EAST, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team found itself trailing by ten strokes after one day of competition at the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational at Lake View Country Club. Playing under less-than-ideal conditions on Saturday the Golden Knights charged from behind to post a four-shot win over host Mercyhurst. It is the third straight year that head coach Dustin Coleman's squad has won the team title.

The 16 teams in the field battled rain, wind, and even hail late in the round, but the adverse weather conditions did not deter the Golden Knights. Gannon shot a total of 297 on Friday and was 10 strokes behind Mercyhurst, as the Lakers came in with a team score of 287. Saturday was a different story as Gannon shaved eight strokes off their total at 289 for a 586 total (+10). The only other team in the field to shoot under 300 was the Gannon B team, which shot a 296 to climb into fourth place at the end of the day at 602 (+26).

Mercyhurst would end up in second place four shots behind Gannon with a 36-hole total of 590. California (Pa.) was third at 601 (+25).
Cal's Reese Watson posted a three-stroke win for the individual title. He followed an opening-round 70 with another 70 on Saturday to finish at 4-under par 140.

Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) made a great charge, also shooting a 70 to tie for the low round of the day. Coupled with a 73 on Friday the senior climbed from a tie for eighth to capture second place at 143 (-1).

Three other Knights finished in the top five at 146 (+2), although one was playing for the B team. Mattia Parrini's (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) 71 moved him up to a tie for fifth, while Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) shot a 74. Parrini started the day tied for 22nd. Freshman Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) enjoyed his best performance as a Golden Knight, finishing in a tie for fifth while performing for the Gannon B team. He shot a 72 on Saturday.

The Gannon men's golfers will likely face similar conditions on Sunday when they host the the Howard "Bud" Elwell Fall Invitational on Sunday and Monday.
