ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team has a busy weekend ahead, and likely a wet one, with a pair of local tournaments. The Golden Knights will play in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational at Lake View Country Club on Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7. The next two days head coach Dustin Coleman's squad hosts the Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational on Sunday, October 8 and Monday, October 9.

A year ago the Golden Knights swept both tournaments, finishing first out of 14 teams with a dominant performance in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational, followed by a one-stroke victory over Ohio Dominican in a shortened Elwell Invitational. Thunderstorms forced cancellation of play for day two.

A total of 13 teams are expected to compete in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational, including seven PSAC teams. The Elwell Invitational is expected to have a field of 11 teams including Clarion, Mercyhurst, Millersville, Shepherd and West Chester from the PSAC.

Gannon looks to make it a three-peat in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational after winning in 2021 and again in 2022. The Golden Knights came in second in 2020 when the tournament was actually played in the spring due to COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights look to defend their crown while claiming the title in the tournament named after the long-time director of athletics and golf coach for the third time in four years.

Gannon also claimed the individual championships in both tournaments. Abe Holmes (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie North Collegiate) defeated teammate Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) on the second playoff hole to come away with the title in the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational as both finished at 3-under par 141.

Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa/St Stithians Boys School) was declared the champion in the Elwell Invitational over Ohio Dominican's Yadhu Urs. Both shot 69's the first day, with Rama winning on a scorecard playoff.

In 2022-23 the Golden Knights won eight tournament titles, including the Mercyhurst Fall Invitational and the Elwell Invitational. Coleman's club is off to another hot start with two first-place showings and a third place. Gannon came away as the champion in the California (Pa.) Vulcan Fall Invitational and won the Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial Tournament two weeks ago.

The Golden Knights come off an impressive showing at the Kuhn Memorial Tournament, beating the 13-team field by 19 strokes while shooting 22-under par for the 36-hole event.

Freshman Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) led a contingent of three Golden Knights to finish in the top five. Parrini had rounds of 68 and 65 to finish at 11-under par, four shots ahead of teammate Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena). Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) tied for fifth place at 2-under par 142.

Senior Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) also has a tournament title on his fall resume', earning medalist honors in the California (Pa.) Vulcan Fall Invitational. The two-time All-PSAC performer posted a three-shot victory with a score of 2-under par 214 in the 54-hole event.

Gannon will conclude its fall campaign on Friday, October 20 to Sunday, October 22 in the PSAC Championships in Lebanon, Pa.
