Head coach Colin Petersen gets 200th career win as Gannon women's soccer team rallies past Seton Hill

Golden Knights score three second-half goals to give 22-year head coach his milestone win

GREENSBURG, Pa. – It's not clear what head coach Colin Petersen said to his Gannon women's soccer team at halftime after the Golden Knights trailed by a goal on Saturday.

Whatever it was, it worked, as Gannon scored three unanswered goals to claim a 3-1 victory over Seton Hill at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.

The victory was the 200th of Petersen's career in 22 seasons as a head coach with the Gannon women's team. He already was the winningest coach in program history.

The Golden Knights are 12-3-1 overall and 12-2-0 in the PSAC West. That gives Petersen a career record of 200-160-37, and he's only getting better. His teams are 39-11-8 over the past three seasons. His wife, Lia Petersen, has been beside him for so many of those wins as an assistant coach.

"There were a lot of tough years and struggles, but every girl that came through our program made a lot of sacrifices and contributions," Petersen said on Saturday after the win. "I also don't have those wins without Lia, who has been with me throughout every season whether she was just a supporting wife, volunteer coach, or my full time 'assistant.'

"My family is a terrific support, and without them, our Gannon story does not happen. I appreciate Gannon University giving me the opportunity to coach full time and, especially early on, having the patience with me to turn the program around."

Gannon's offensive attack sputtered in the first half against Seton Hill. The Griffins took the lead 20 minutes into the game as Natalie Maver scored off an assist from Maddie Teakle.

Seton Hill took that 1-0 lead into halftime, but the lead did not last long in the second half. Gannon freshman Hannah Shepard (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tied the score at 1-1 just 2:31 into the second half as junior Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) picked up the assist.

Less than six minutes later, another freshman, Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane), scored an unassisted goal to give Gannon the lead for good. It was the team-leading 10th goal of the season for Respecki. She also leads the team with 28 points.

Boden then scored an insurance goal at the 71:46 mark.

As it has all season, Gannon controlled the ball for much of the game. Gannon outshot Seton Hill 20-5 and led the Griffins 8-3 in shots on goal.

Gannon is now tied with Mercyhurst (12-1-0) with a PSAC West-leading 36 points in the standings, but the Lakers own the tiebreaker. Slippery Rock (11-2-2) is right behind with 35 points.

Gannon and Slippery Rock will meet on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Slippery Rock.

Gannon will close the regular season at home against IUP on Friday.
