Gannon Ranked Sixth in NWCA Women's Wrestling Preseason Poll

Four Golden Knights appear in individual rankings

BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Gannon University women wrestling team will enter the first season of head coach Erin Vandiver's tenure with high expectations. The NWCA released its Women's Wrestling Preseason Poll on Thursday, with the Golden Knights sixth in the preseason poll.

North Central captured the top spot in the poll while King is second. McKendree holds down the third spot while Colorado Mesa. Sacred Heart is ranked fifth, just ahead of the Golden Knights, in the NWCA rankings. East Stroudsburg is next in seventh place, while Lock Haven and Iowa are tied for eighth. Adrain completes the top ten. Gannon finished tenth last year at the NCWWC National Championships. 

The NWCA also released its individual rankings, with four Golden Knights appearing in the poll. Lili Ujfalvi (Kecskemet-heteny, Hungary/Bolyai Janos Secondary School) and Jewel Gonzalez (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) are the highest ranked Golden Knights, with Ujfalvi ranked third at 143 lbs. and Gonzalez at 170 lbs.  A year ago as a freshman Ujfalvi earned All-American honors with a fifth place finish at 143 lbs. at Nationals. She finished with a 28-12 record, leading Gannon in wins.

Gonzalez, a senior, is actually one of two Golden Knights ranked at 170 lbs. Annabelle Helm (Vancouver, Wash./Union) is fourth. Both earned All-American accolades, and actually squared off in the seventh-place match at 170 lbs. Gonzalez claimed a 2-1 decision to take seventh place, with Helm placing eighth. Gonzalez ended the year at 22-10 with Helm at 20-12. Helm, a graduate student, also earned All-American honors in 2019-20 with a fifth-place finish at 155 lbs.

The final Golden Knight to appear in the preseason poll is Julianne Mocchia. The junior was an All-American in 2021-22 after placing seventh at 109 lbs. She is ranked sixth at 109 lbs. Moccia ended the year at 18-7 after going 23-8 as a freshman.

Gannon will make its debut under Vandiver in the ESU Open on Sunday, November 5.
