Women’s Wrestling Looks to Expand Exposure in 2025-26

ERIE, Pa. -- The 2025-26 season marks a momentous campaign for the Gannon women's wrestling team as the NCAA has now added the sport and will host the national championships in March.

The Golden Knights begin their third season with Erin Vandiver at the helm and made huge strides in year number two. Gannon set a school record for dual wins finishing with an 11-4 record.

They went on to win the NCWWC Region 4 Championship, the first regional title in team history, qualifying nine wrestlers for the NCWWC National Championships with five regional champions. Two weeks later Gannon placed 14th out of 64 teams    Nyla Burgess (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering High School) earned All-American honors with a fourth place showing at 160 lbs., the highest finish ever by a Golden Knight.

"We are excited for the 2025-2026 season," related Vandiver. "Our schedule pits the Golden Knights against the best competition in the country. We will return to the NWCA National Duals and make our first appearance at the Journeyman Women's College Duals, where we will face Iowa, Sacred Heart, King, and Elmira.

"The Gannon Women's Duals will feature a strong field, with three top 15 teams from last year, as well as Lehigh," she continued. "The competition will mirror World Cup format, with two round robin pools and placing matches through 7th/8th. This is a great opportunity for the community to come out to see high level women's wrestling in a fun and competitive dual meet style competition."

All told Vandiver's 2025-26 schedule has three home duals plus the Gannon Women's Duals as one of the pioneers in women's wrestling continues to educate the area on the growing sport.

"Having more home matches is important for our program," she stressed.  "We hope to have the Gannon and western Pennsylvania communities come out to support us at home in Erie. Our team is growing even stronger. We're ready to jump levels again next year and continue to challenge ourselves."

The season once again gets underway with the ESU Open on Sunday, November 2. The following weekend they head to Adrian College in Michigan, competing in the Adrian Duals on Saturday, November 8 followed by the Adrian Invite on Sunday, November 9.
