Bazemore, Burgess Remain Alive after First Day at NCWWC Women's Wrestling National Championships

CORALVILLE, Iowa – The first day of action is done at the 2025 NCWWC Women's Wrestling National Championships. The event is being held at the Extream Arena and hosted by the University of Iowa.
 
Gannon started with nine wrestlers and four advanced to the evening's second session. Nyla Burgess (Ajax, Ontario/Pickering High School) was the lone Golden Knights to reach the quarterfinals as she picked up a pair of wins in Session 1 at 160 lbs. She opened with a fall at 1:57 over Quincy's Sophia Sosa, then a won her second bout again by fall at 2:24 over Elleni Johnson of Grand Valley State.
 
When the wrestling wrapped up after Session 2 a pair of Golden Knights remained – Burgess and Jayden Bazemore (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Ranch) at 124 lbs. Burgess lost by technical fall to Tiffani Baublitz of East Stroudsburg 10-0 (5:16) in her quarterfinal match. The senior takes a 25-7 record into Saturday's action.
 
Bazemore opened with a technical fall over Jayla Oberst of Albion by a 10-0 score at 4:19, but in the second round lost by fall to Alexandra Fitzgerald of Sacred Heart at 3:35. The junior came back with a pair of wins in the consolation rounds – a 5-3 decision over Liannette Ortiz of Wartburg and an 11-4 decision over William Jewell's Emarie Bolosan. She is now 23-7.
 
Both Bazemore and Burgess return to the mats on Saturday needing a win to earn All-American honors.
 
A pair of freshmen -- Jada Badayos-Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel High) and Bella Phillips (Bellingham, Wash./Squalicum High School) – finished with 2-2 records at Nationals. Badayos-Chavez competed at 103 lbs. while Phillips was at 180 lbs. Phillips ended an impressive year with a 38-9 record, a school record for wins in a season.  
 
A total of 64 teams are competing at the National Championships, with North Central currently edging out Iowa for first place. North Central has 111 points while Iowa has 107.5 points. McKendree is in third place with 103 points. Gannon tied for 17th with 19.5 points.
