Gannon Concludes Fall Season with Third Place Showing at PSAC Championships

Giovanni Delorenzi takes third place in individual standings

LEBANON, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team finished in third place at the PSAC Championships on Sunday to conclude the 2023 fall campaign. The 54-hole, 10-team event was held at Iron Valley Golf Club.

The Golden Knights entered the third round trailing Indiana (Pa.) by 12 strokes. On a day when strong winds buffeted the course, it was Millersville that made a run in adverse conditions to deny IUP a fifth straight PSAC title.

Giovanni DelorenziMillersville and IUP entered the final day tied at 32-over, but the Marauders ended up running away with the crown. Millersville had an aggregate of 296 after Saturday's 299 total and finished at 903 (+39). IUP was 14 strokes back at 917 (+63). Gannon had the second-best total of the day at 308 to come in with a 928 total (+64).

On Saturday the back nine was the achilles heel for the Golden Knights, but on Sunday they had to battle on the front nine. It may well have cost Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) the individual crown, although the Millersville duo of Timothy Peters and Bobby Lugiano turned in spectacular rounds given the conditions. Peters ended up finishing as the individual champion after entering the day tied with Delorenzi for the lead after 36 holes. He shot a 74 to finish at 219 (+3), holding off teammate Lugiano who shot a 70, the low round of the tournament, to come in at 221 (+5). In fact, only 21 of the 49 golfers competing shot in the 70's on Sunday.

Delorenzi finished a stroke behind Lugiano at 222 (+6) after shooting 77 on Sunday. The sophomore was done in by a 41 on the front nine despite an eagle three on the 461-yard par five third hole. He rallied with an even-par 36 on the back, including birdies on 16th and 17th holes. Th sophomore from Italy finished in a tie for 17th last year.

Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) overcame an opening round 84 to finish 17th at 237 (+12) after firing a 74 on Sunday. The junior moved up 12 spots on the final day. He sizzled on the front nine with a 34. Like Delorenzi, he had an eagle three on the third hole along with three other birdies. His 74 was tied for the third-lowest round on the day.

Senior Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) shot 82 on the final day to finish tied for 18th at 238 (+22). Freshman Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) battled a balky back throughout the tournament but finished with a 78 on the final round to end in a tie for 20th at 239 (+23). Fellow freshman Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) came in tied for 29th after shooting 79 on Sunday. After a tough front nine showed plenty of the final nine of the fall with a one-under 35 that included a stretch of four birdies in five holes.
