Delorenzi in First Place, Gannon Second after 18 Holes at PSAC Championships

LEBANON, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team is in second place after the first day of competition at the 2023 PSAC Men's Golf Championships. The Golden Knights trail Indiana (Pa.) by five strokes after 18 holes at Iron Valley Golf Club. IUP finished at 302, 14-over par, while Gannon is at 19-over 307. Ten teams are competing in the three-day, 54-hole championship.

Gannon is in search of its first PSAC championship after finishing second the last two years to IUP. The Crimson Hawks have won four straight PSAC titles and have dominated the conference through the years with 32 championships.

Head coach Dustin Coleman's wish entering the tournament was a fast start, and for the most part that was the case as the Golden Knights battled the Crimson Hawks on even terms most of the way. But the back nine caught up with Gannon. The five Golden Knights combined for a 12-over score on the front nine, but they came in at 19-over on the back nine. They had five birdies on the front nine and three on the back, but the back nine featured 18 bogeys plus a pair of double bogeys. They had just 11 bogeys and three double bogeys on the front.

"We had a slow start today but knowing we didn't play near our best and are still only a couple back is encouraging," related Coleman. "The wind was up nut that's nothing we aren't used to. Gio (Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena)) played really solid and we'll need that from others if we want to make up some ground tomorrow. Mattia (Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo)) has been playing great but is battling a back right now and is hoping to grind through it the next two days. There's a lot of golf left and we're looking to take advantage of that."

Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) leads the 50 golfers in the field after firing a 72, the only player at par or better. Connor Strine of West Chester and Timothy Peters of Millersville, and Mercyhurst's Evan Rowane are tied for second a stroke back at 73 (+1).

Delorenzi got off to an ominous start with a double bogey on the par-4 first hole. He proceeded to birdie three of the next four holes and finished the back nine at one under-par 35. The sophomore would string together 11 straight pars in between the front and the back nine before bogeying the 17th hole and paring 18 for a 37 on the back nine.

Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) is tied for eighth after shooting an open round 76 (+4). The senior had three birdies in his round, two on the back nine, but the final nine holes also featured five bogeys.

Freshmen Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) and Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) concluded Gannon's scorers with rounds of 79 and 80. Wolak is tied for 21st while Parrini is tied for 28th. Wolak had a 37 on the front nine with a birdie on the par-5 seventh hole, but came in at 42 on the back, closing with a bogey and a double bogey. Parrini shot 40-40 but was second on the team with 11 pars. Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) is tied for 37th after shooting an 84.

The ten teams return to Iron Valley Golf Club for 18 holes on Saturday and 18 more on Sunday when the 2023 PSAC champion will be crowned.
