ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University men's swimming and diving team won every event of the night and posted a trio of new pool records at Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool in the team's first competition of 2023, a 166-39 dual meet win over Edinboro University.
The men kicked off the dual with one of the new records, as
Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum),
Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tn./Home Life Academy),
David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled), and
Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys') notched a 3:28.34 in the 400 medley relay—besting the previous record of 3:33.85 set by a Canisius College quartet way back in the 2010-11 season.
The Knights followed that up with another brand new pool record courtesy of
Ryan Barclay (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) in the 1650 freestyle. Barclay excelled in the always-grueling event and posted a 16:37.54, about 15 seconds quicker than the previous record of 16:52.86 (set by Allegheny's Grant Richman during the 2011-12 campaign.)
Gannon proceeded to rattle off victories in every event of the evening, including 1-2 finishes in the 200 freestyle (
Alex Deemer (Connoquenessing, Pa./Butler Area) and
Seth Butler (Maineville, Oh./Little Miami)), the 200 fly (Gallion and
Kaleb Lombard (Graaff-Reinet, South Africa/Grey College)), the 100 free (Ju. Decheck and
Will Moses (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake)), the 500 free (Boyle and Deemer), and the 200 breaststroke (
Aidar Sataev (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan/Forest Hill) and Butler.)
The team also claimed an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 200 individual medley, with
Will Retsch (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) (1:56.25) finishing just ahead of
Andrew Beyer (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) (1:59.55) and Lombard (2:02.14.)
Other individual event wins came from
Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys') in the 50 free (time of 21.10) and the 200 back (Retsch in 1:58.31.)
In the diving portion of the event, contested only on the one-meter boards,
Kollin Schwab (Erie, Pa./McDowell) tallied a total of 299.92 to claim first place after six total dives while
Max Campbell (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory) was in second with 241.20.
The men closed out the meet with the third pool record of the evening—a 1:24.79 in the 200 freestyle relay by McCallum, Beyer, Ju. Decheck, and
Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum)—that just snuck under the 1:25.02 set by the Golden Knights back in the 2019-20 season.
The dual meet victory is Gannon's third of the season and the squad will have a chance to earn another in less than 24 hours as the team travels to Penn State Behrend on Saturday, Jan. 21 for another dual beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Gannon also celebrated Senior Night, with Beyer, Ju. Decheck, Deemer, Gallion, and Schwab all honored for their contributions to the program prior to the first race of the evening.
