MEADVILLE – The Gannon University men's golf team and its No. 1 player,
Abe Holmes (Barrie, Ontario/Barrie North Collegiate), continued their streak of early season dominance on Monday.
Coach
Dustin Coleman's team claimed its fourth consecutive team title in four tournaments as they pulled away for a 28-stroke win in Allegheny College's Guy and Jeanne Kuhn Memorial tournament at The Country Club of Meadville.
Despite playing in rain for much of the tournament, the Golden Knights finished the two-day, 36-hole tournament with a 3-under-par total of 573 to comfortably top the 16-team field. Second-place Carnegie Melon had a 25-over-par 601 total, while Allegheny finished at 27-over 603.
It was the fourth straight title for Gannon's men, who earlier won the California Vulcan Invitational, Mercyhurst's Evann Parker Memorial, and Gannon's own Howard "Bud" Elwell Invitational.
Holmes, meanwhile, captured his third individual title of the season. He shot a 3-under-par 69 on Monday after opening with an even-par 72 on Sunday as he finished with a 3-under 141. That tied him with teammate
Ryan Ferry (Meadville, Pa./Meadville), who shot rounds of 71 and 70. However, Holmes claimed the title by virtue of his lower second-round score.
It also marked the third time this season that Holmes had tied a teammate for the low score. In the first two tourneys of the season, he beat Ferry and
Michael Wareham (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) in two-hole playoffs.
Gannon sophomore
Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights), who shot a tourney-leading 6-under 66 in the first round, finished third for Gannon. He carded a 4-over 76 on Monday and finished with a 2-under 142.
Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy), playing as an individual, finished sixth with a total of 69-77-146. Wareham tied for 12th with 75-75-150 and
Shaunak Rama (Bryanston, South Africa)Â tied for 16th at 74-80-154.
Also playing as an individual,
Dylan Flinchbaugh (Saegertown/Saegertown) carded rounds of 80-85-165.
