Gannon Announces 2022 Women's Soccer Schedule

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon University head women's soccer coach Colin Petersen has announced the 2022 women's soccer schedule. The long-time head coach led Gannon to a 12-4-3 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017.

Petersen must replace several key performers and to make matters even more difficult he not only must traverse an always strong PSAC field but both of his non-conference contests feature teams that also qualified for the NCAA Atlantic Regional.

"The schedule for this year is as always very challenging," Petersen commented. "There are never any easy games no matter what your standing is in the league. We have added two very tough out of conference regional away games to start the season and then start conference play with Slippery Rock. No easy feat but I am sure the girls will be up for the challenge."

Gannon's 18-game schedule will include eight contests at the new-renovated McConnell Family Stadium, Crews are currently finishing up installing a new artificial surface along with a new scoreboard.

However, before taking the field for the first home game the Golden Knights first face an arduous two-game swing to West Virginia to face a pair of NCAA Tournament teams from last year. The 2022 season gets underway on Thursday, August 25 at Concord. The Lions were 20-1-3 last year, winning the Mountain East Conference championship, followed by the Atlantic Regional title to reach the NCAA quarterfinals. They would lose to Saint Rose 3-2 in overtime in the quarterfinals.

Two days later Gannon plays at Charleston(WV) on Saturday, August 27. The Eagles were 15-6-0 in 2021 and made the Atlantic Regional before losing to West Chester.

The home opener pits the Golden Knights against Slippery Rock on Wednesday, August 31 in the PSAC opener. SRU was 12-4-3 a year ago, meaning Gannon's first three opponents had a 47-11-6 combined record last year. The match begins a stretch of 16 straight games against PSAC West competition to end the regular season.

Gannon heads back out on the road for two more games after that, leaving the Golden Knights with four road contests on the first five games. They play at Indiana(Pa.) (8-8-1) on Saturday, September 3 and at Edinboro (9-9-0) on Wednesday, September 7.

Three of the next four games are at home as Gannon plays back-to-back home games just twice in 2022. The first comes on Saturday, September 10 and Saturday, September 17 with Clarion (4-12-1) visiting McConnell Family Stadium the first weekend and Seton Hill (7-9-1) the second.

Gannon then plays the first of two games against crosstown rival Mercyhurst, the initial contest on the Mercyhurst campus on Wednesday, September 21. The Lakers were 14-6-1 last year and are another opponent on the Gannon schedule that made the 2021 NCAA Tournament.

California (Pa.) (3-13-1) visits McConnell Family Stadium on Saturday, September 24. After a Wednesday, September 28 game at Pitt-Johnstown (5-11-2) to wrap up the first half of conference play, the second half begins on Saturday, October 1 with the second meeting against IUP on Homecoming.

Gannon plays four of its next five games on the road, beginning with games at Slippery Rock (Oct. 5) and at Clarion (Oct. 8). The Golden Knights host Edinboro on Wednesday, Oct. 12 before two more road games at Seton Hill (Oct. 15) and at California(Pa.) (Oct 22).

The regular season concludes with a pair of games at McConnell Family. The first is on Wednesday, October 26 as Gannon hosts the second meeting with Mercyhurst. That's followed by a Saturday, October 29 game vs. Pitt-Johnstown.

The PSAC Tournament begins on Tuesday, November 1 with the quarterfinals, followed by the semifinals and finals on Friday, November 4 and Sunday, November 6, respectively. The highest remaining seed in the Western Division will host the Final Four.
