Come-From-Behind Kids Head to D'Youville on Saturday

– After posting one of the biggest wins and most impressive comebacks in recent memory, the Gannon women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, April 2 with a non-conference contest at D'Youville. The contest was recently moved up and will now start at 1 p.m. at Dobson Field in Buffalo, N.Y. It is the final non-conference game for the Golden Knights. They wrap up the regular season with seven straight PSAC contests.
 
For the second straight match the Golden Knights faced a large second-half deficit. Last Saturday they trailed Seton Hill, the preseason favorite in the PSAC West, by nine goals and pulled to within three goals before dropping a 15-10 decision. Similarly on Wednesday, a strong Slippery Rock team and trailed 13-6 at the half. They would proceed to outscore SRU 10-2 in the second half. Macy Hepditch (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) completed the comeback with her career-high seventh goal with just 12 seconds remaining as Gannon claimed a 16-15 win to improve to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the PSAC West.
 
D'Youville comes in with a 4-5 record and is 0-1 in the East Coast Conference. The Saints opened ECC play with a 12-10 loss to Molloy last Saturday. They have played two other PSAC teams, dropping a 13-6 decision to Mercyhurst and losing to Slippery Rock, 15-12.
     
Hepditch's career day presented third-year head coach Jennifer Pawlowski with her first career win at McConnell Family Stadium as Gannon's head coach. The sophomore added an assist to give her eight points, also a career high. McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) came off the bench to chip in three goals and an assist, while Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) also scored three times. Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) played the final 37 minutes in goal, recording 10 saves to earn the victory. She allowed just six goals, including only two in the second half.
 
At one point Gannon scored seven straight goals – three by Hepditch and two by Woodworth -- to tie the score at 14-14 with just over nine minutes left. Slippery Rock regained the lead, but Gannon scored the final to goals. Woodworth tied the game with 4:07 remaining to set up Hepditch's winning goal.
 
The Golden Knights opened the season with a 13-10 loss at Shepherd before running off two wins in North Carolina. They recorded an 11-8 win at Lenoir-Rhyne, holding the Bears scoreless in the second half, then won a 13-12 game in overtime at Catawba. They opened at home against Bloomsburg, dropping a 20-9 decision to the Huskies, before a 15-8 loss to Lock Haven. They snapped the two-game losing streak in impressive fashion with a 23-0 win over Edinboro, the third shutout in program history. They snapped a two-game losing streak with the win over Slippery Rock, with the Seton Hill setback preceeded by a 17-6 loss at Indiana(Pa.).
 
Pawlowski leads a young team that continues to grow, showcasing Woodworth, the 2021 PSAC West Freshman of the Year. The sophomore leads the team with 23 goals, adding six assists for a team-high 29 points. She earned second team All-PSAC West honors a year ago after leading Gannon in goals (40), assists (60), and points (46). She ranked sixth in the PSAC in goals.
 
With teams paying particular attention to Woodworth, Hepditch, Stevens and Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) have stepped up to help shoulder the scoring load. Hepditch boosted her total to 17 goals and a team-high nine assists for 26 points. Stevens, a freshman, has 22 goals and two assists for 24 points, while Tufts adds 15 goals and a pair of assists for 17 points. Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) add 13 goals. Tufts led the PSAC in goals in 2020 with 22 and points with 27.
 
Pawlowski has employed both Jess and Kendra Delissio (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) in goal. Delissio has played 282 minutes and has a 9.98 GAA, while Jess has played 258 minutes and owns a 15.79 GAA.
 
D'Youville features high-scoring graduate student Marissa Malvaso. She ha scored 29 goals along with 15 assists for 44 points.
