Boyle, McCallum set new pool records as Golden Knights best IUP, 169-117

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon University men's swimming and diving team set a pair of pool records at Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool in the team's first home dual meet since early 2020 on its way to defeating Indiana (Pa.), 169-117, for its second victory of the season and fourth consecutive over the Crimson Hawks.

The men began the dual with a win in the 200 yard medley relay (in 1:33.86 from Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), Josh Nel (Johannesburg, South Africa/American International), David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled), and Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys').)

Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tn./Home Life Academy) followed up that performance by earning one of the aforementioned pool records—a 9:41.06 in the 1000 freestyle.

McCallum added the other new record in the 100 freestyle, clocking a 45.75 to set the new standard. Boyle also came incredibly close to another record in his other individual win of the day (a 4:41.90 in the 500 free.)

Other individual event wins came from Ju. Decheck in the 50 backstroke (23.77), Gallion in the 100 fly (51.34), and Will Retsch (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) in the 100 individual medley (52.56.) The men also made it a sweep of the day's relays with a thrilling victory by a single hundredth of a second in the 200 free (1:25.39 from McCallum, Will Moses (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake), Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), and Ju. Decheck) to squeak past IUP's 1:25.40.

In the diving portion of the event, contested only on the one-meter boards, Max Campbell (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Preparatory) earned a pair of second-place finishes (235.50 in the six-dive session and 151.05 in the five-dive session.)

The Crimson Hawks did set a new pool record in the 50 freestyle thanks to Thomas McGillan's blazing 20.60, which is also an NCAA "B" qualifying time.

The Golden Knights have earned the rest of the year off and return to the pool in 2023 with a home dual meet on Friday, Jan. 20 versus Edinboro.
