Men's swimming and diving opens dual meet season with 172-90 win over Clarion

The Golden Knights won 10 of 14 events

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon University men's swimming and diving team won 10 of 14 events en route to a 172-90 win over Clarion University in Friday night's dual meet. Newcomer Aidar Sataev (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan/Forest Hill) and Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys') both won a pair of individual events—Sataev taking first in both breaststrokes and McCallum touching the wall first in the 50 and 100 freestyles.) Sataev was also a part of the first-place 400 medley relay squad (as was McCallum, who also added a first-place mark as part of the 200 free relay.)

The Golden Knights also set multiple new pool records on the night, with Sataev's 58.59 in the 100 breaststroke and 2:10.62 in the 200 breaststroke the fastest-ever in Clarion's Tippin Natatorium. McCallum set new pool marks in the 50 free (21.09) and 100 free (46.86) and was part of the 200 freestyle relay quartet (along with Connor Hebert (Damascus, Md./Damascus), Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), and Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum)) that set the new pool record after a time of 1:26.37.

Distance specialist Ryan Barclay (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) also had a successful evening, with a first-place finish in the 500 free (4:58.04) and almost caught Clarion's Ty Rabenstein in the 1000 free, finishing about two seconds behind (in 10:07.55) for second place. Gannon had a strong showing in that event, with Hiyan Kubagawa's (Sao Paulo, Brazil/) third-place mark of 10:20.78 and Alex Deemer (Connoquenessing, Pa./Butler Area) in fourth with a 10:21.38. Deemer also swam well in the 500 free, just a second behind Barclay (time of 4:59.11) for a second-place finish.

Other first-place swimmers included Andrew Beyer (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) in the 200 backstroke (time of 1:58.12), David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) in the 100 butterfly (52.07), and freshman Will Retsch (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) in the 200 IM (1:58.78). Kaleb Lombard (Graaff-Reinet, South Africa/Grey College) and Seth Butler (Maineville, Oh./Little Miami) finished right behind Retsch in the 200 IM to make it a 1-2-3 finish for the Golden Knights.

The Golden Knights actually finished 1-2-3 in two other events on the night: Sataev, Josh Nel (Johannesburg, South Africa/American International), and Retsch in the 100 breast and Sataev, freshman Malachi Boyle (Knoxville, Tn./Home Life Academy), and Kubagawa in the 200 breast.

Diver Kollin Schwab (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had a huge night on the 1-meter boards, finishing first with a total score of 232.25. He also added a fourth-place mark in the 3-meter event with a 194.63.
