EDINBORO, Pa. – Gannon men's swimming touched the wall first in nine of 12 events and rolled to a 143-57 dual meet victory over Edinboro on Friday evening in a competition of cross-county rivals. The Knights were victorious in six individual events, both relays and 3-meter diving.
Five GU swimmers earned first-place finishes on Friday evening, including two by
Joey Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) in the 50 freestyle (21.86) and 100 freestyle (48.50) events.
Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys') added a third freestyle victory for the Knights with a time of 1:47.21 in the 200 free.
Seth Butler (Maineville, Oh./Little Miami) finished with an impressive time of 4:22.22 in the 400 IM for Gannon, while
David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) (51.97) and
Hiyan Kubagawa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) (1:00.56) finished first in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke events.
The Gannon relay team of
Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum), Butler,
Kirk Klemm (Cape Coral, Fla./North Fort Myers) and (Joey) Decheck turned in a first-place time of 1:36.00 in the 200 medley relay to open the event. To cap the evening, McCallum, Klemm, (Justin) Decheck and
Connor Hebert (Damascus, Md./Damascus) ran away with a win in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.07.
Gannon was also victorious in the 3-meter diving event, but final results from that event were unavailable on Friday evening.
Edinboro had a big night in the distance events, touching the wall first in both the 500 and 1650 freestyle, as well as the 100 backstroke. McCallum finished second in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.81 for Gannon, while
Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) was second in the 1650 with a time of 17:31.74. (Justin) Decheck finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.85.
Gannon will now head west to Cleveland to take on Cleveland State and Denison University in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon. The diving portion of the meet will begin at 11 a.m., while the swimming will begin at 1 p.m.
