Men's swimming and diving seeks fourth dual meet victory this weekend

ERIE, Pa. –  Gannon University's men's swimming and diving team returns to the pool for a busy weekend, beginning with a dual meet at Edinboro on Friday, Jan. 21 at 5:00 p.m. and concluding with a tri-meet at Cleveland State on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1:00 p.m. where the team competes with the hosts and Denison University. The men's team carries a 3-1 dual meet record into the weekend.

Gannon has had success against the Fighting Scots (0-4 record in 2021-2022) in recent years, notching four consecutive dual meet victories dating back to the 2016-2017 season. The Golden Knights bested Edinboro 126.5-87.5 in January of 2020, including current knights Alex Deemer (Connoquenessing, Pa./Butler Area) and Robert Bolmanski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) picking up two victories apiece: Deemer in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle and Bolmanski in the 100 and 200 freestyle. Additional first-place finishes included Kollin Schwab (Erie, Pa./McDowell) in one-meter diving and Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) in the 100-yard butterfly.

In 2019 (a 176-71 dual meet) Bolmanski won the 200 freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke and David Gallion (Arlington, Va./Homeschooled) took first place in the 200 yard butterfly and 200-yard IM.

The last time the Knights were in competition was on Dec. 4, 2021, claiming wins in 11 of 14 events in a 170-92 dual meet win at Indiana (Pa.) Gannon also finished one-two in six events in addition to a clean top-three sweep in the 200 backstroke.

Hiyan Kubagawa (Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the way with three event wins against IUP—in the 200 breaststroke, 200 fly, and 200 IM. A pair of Knights picked up two victories each: Stephen McCallum (Cape Town, South Africa/Wynberg Boys') (100 and 200 free) and Ryan Barclay (Knoxville, TN/Bearden) (500 and 1000 free.) Additional wins were claimed by Justin Decheck (Plum, Pa./Plum) in the 50 yard backstroke and Andrew Beyer (Warren, Pa./Warren Area) in the 200 backstroke.

Following Friday's action the team returns to Cleveland State, the site of the 2021 Magnus Cup, where Gannon swimmers earned a total of 68 PSAC qualifying times. The Knights are set to compete against both the host Vikings (a Division I program who finished first in the Magnus Cup men's team standings) and Denison University beginning with diving at 11:00 a.m. followed by swimming at 1:00 p.m.
