THE GANNON-EDINBORO SERIES
Gannon leads all-time series 17-8-5
Last meeting: Sept. 25, 2021 – Gannon 3, Edinboro 2  OT | RECAP

ERIE, Pa. – There's plenty at stake when the Gannon University women's soccer team makes the short trek down I-79 to play at Edinboro on Wednesday evening. The Lady Knights come into the match leading the PSAC West with a 9-2-2 record and are 9-2-2 overall. Edinboro is fourth in the division at 7-5-0 in league play and 8-5-0 overall.

With three contests remaining, Gannon is in search of its first PSAC Tournament berth since 2017. Head coach Colin Petersen's team is riding a five-match winning streak, the longest since the 2015 edition opened the season with 17 consecutive victories. The winning streak has vaulted the Lady Knights to the top of the Western Division with 29 points. Slippery Rock is closely behind with 28 points, while Mercyhurst is third with 25 points. One more win will secure a playoff berth for Gannon.

Edinboro is looking to hold off Indiana(Pa.) for the final spot in the division. The Fighting Scots have 21 points while IUP sits at 19 points. Both teams have four matches remaining.

Gannon and Edinboro squared off the first time this season on September 25 at McConnell Family Stadium, with GU upsetting an Edinboro team that came in ranked 11th in Division II by a 3-2 score in overtime. Kayla Bevacqua (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame) scored off a feed from Diante Scheppers at the 93:06 mark for the winning goal as Edinboro suffered its first loss of the season.

Gannon was sixth a week ago in the United Soccer Coaches Atlantic Region rankings and added a pair of shutouts to its resume, 2-0 at IUP and 3-0 over Cal on Saturday. The Lady Knights have been stingy all year on defense, allowing just 11 goals total with six shutouts, including three in the last four matches.

The Lady Knights were dominant in Saturday's win over Cal, outshooting the Vulcans 29-7 as Kennedy Solymosi (Eastlake, Ohio/Lake Catholic) recorded her fourth shutout. Jamie Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first half, and Sarah Fails (Girard, Pa./Villa Maria) and Bevacqua followed with goal less than five minutes apart early in the second half.

Gannon features a balanced scoring attack, with eight different players scoring goals. Lewis, a redshirt senior forward, leads the way with seven goals and three assists for 17 points. Fails and Bevacqua are next with 11 goals on the strength of four goals and three assists. Freshman midfielder Gabby Boden (Butler, Pa./Butler) adds four goals and an assist for nine points. Senior Solymosi has seen the majority of action in goal, showing an 8-1-2 record with a 0.88 GAA and an .815 save percentage. She ranks fifth in the PSAC in save percentage and sixth in GAA. The defense also features sophomore defender Gretchen Oslick (Freedom, Pa./Ambridge), who was name the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week on Monday.

Edinboro won its first five matches under long-time head coach Gary Kagiavas, a former Gannon men's soccer standout. The Fighting Scots snapped a three-game losing streak last Wednesday with a 2-1 win over Clarion.  Brittnie Spithaler leads the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points. Anna Voelker is a veteran in goal. The xx has a 1.34 GAA and a .726 save percentage.

Gannon plays its final two contests at home, hosting Clarion on Wednesday, November 3 and Slippery Rock on Saturday, November 6.
