  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team used a sixth-inning home run from freshman Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) during the opener and walk-off single by junior Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) in the nightcap to sweep a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown Sunday afternoon at a sunny and warm McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Redshirt sophomore Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) put Gannon on the board early with a solo home run to left field during the bottom of the first inning.
  • Pitt-Johnstown flipped the one-run deficit into a one-run lead during the top of the second inning.
  • Gannon responded with the tying run during the bottom of the frame. Junior Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) singled through the left side with one out. He moved to second on a walk to junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) and scored on a junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville)'s RBI single to right field.
  • The game remained deadlocked until Quiceno drilled a solo blast over the left field fence with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Pitt-Johnstown started the top of the seventh inning with a double and had the tying run on third base with one out. However, Colosi grabbed a sharp ground ball right at bag, tagged the runner out and threw onto first for a game-ending double play.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Colosi recorded two of Gannon's five hits, going 2-for-3 with one run.
  • Junior David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) went the distance on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits through seven innings. He struck out three and walked two while improving to 4-2.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights won their fifth consecutive home game against the Mountain Cats dating back to the 2015 campaign.
  • Cardy moved into a tie with Adam Foust (1998-99) for ninth place all-time at Gannon with his ninth career home run.
  • Cricks moved into a tie with Greg Radwan (2007-10) and Matt Tobin (2012-15) for fourth place all-time at Gannon since 2000 with his 11th career victory.
  • Colosi recorded his team-best eighth multiple hit game of the season.
  • Cricks moved past Matt Berkey (2002-05) and into Gannon's all-time top 10 since 2000 with 142 career innings pitched.
  • Cricks recorded his second complete game of the season and seventh of his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Gannon went right to work during its first at-bat. Junior Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) led off with a single, advanced to second base on a hit-and-run and scored on Quiceno's single through the right side.
  • The two teams traded zeros until Pitt-Johnstown flipped the score with a pair of runs during the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Mountain Cats extended their lead to 3-1 with another run during the fifth inning.
  • Gannon cut the deficit to one with a run of its own during the bottom of the frame. Nicolia was the spark plug again with a lead-off double to left center field. He then scored on back-to-back ground-outs by Oruch and Cardy.
  • Sophomore Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) kept Gannon within striking distance by retiring the final eight Mountain Cats of the game.
  • It was enough to allow the Golden Knights to generate the winning runs during the bottom of the seventh inning. Cox led off with a bullet line drive back up the middle and into center field. Junior Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) followed with a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt, but the throw was wild to put runners on the corners with no outs.
  • Nicolia followed with a perfect bunt that scored Cox with the tying run and pushed Benack into scoring position. After a wild pitch moved Benack to third base, Oruch singled through the right side on the first pitch he saw from reliever Ty Black to set off 4-3 walk-off celebration.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Six different Golden Knights accounted for Gannon's eight hits.
  • Nicolia went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI out of the lead-off role.
  • Cox finished 2-for-3 with one run.
  • Morrison improved to 4-1 while going the distance on the mound, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out two and walked one.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Gannon is ranked eighth in the latest NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights won their sixth consecutive home game against the Mountain Cats dating back to the 2015 campaign.
  • Gannon recorded its first doubleheader sweep since taking two against West Virginia Wesleyan March 4 at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.
  • Cox moved into a three-way lead among Golden Knights with his eighth multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Nicolia produced his fifth multiple-hit performance of the season and scored multiple runs for the second time.
  • Morrison tossed his first career complete game.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to action Tuesday, April 11 with a single nine-inning game at Lake Erie.
  • The non-conference affair begins at 2 p.m.
  • Gannon has won the last two meetings between the two teams, but both were play at McConnell Family Stadium.
  • The Golden Knights posted an 18-6 victory earlier this season on March 23 and 11-7 win last season at home.
  • Tuesday will be Gannon's first appearance in Painesville, Ohio since a four-game series April 17-18, 2010. The Golden Knights swept the first doubleheader of that series, before the Storm captured the final two games.
