HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • California (Pa.) struck first with a single run during its first at-bat, but Gannon quickly answered with three runs during its first time to the plate. The runs scored on an RBI single by junior Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls), RBI double by Cardy and sacrifice fly by junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville).
  • The Vulcans almost tied the contest during the top of the third inning, but Cox reached over the left field fence and robbed David Marcus of a two-run home run to end the threat.
  • Gannon extended its lead to 4-1 during the bottom of the third inning. Colosi led off with a single, moved to third on a double by Cardy and scored on another sacrifice fly by Cox.
  • The Gannon lead increased to 5-1 when redshirt freshman Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) blasted a lead-off homer over the right field netting and across Fifth Street in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • California (Pa.) got off the deck and pulled within 5-4 after plating three runs during the top of the fifth inning. The Vulcans had the tying run on second base, before junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) came out of the bullpen to preserve the lead with a foul-out to first base.
  • Gannon then erupted for 10 runs during the bottom of the frame. Thirteen Golden Knights batted and seven recorded RBIs during the explosion. A grand slam to left field by Cardy capped the long inning, giving the home squad a 15-4 lead.
  • California (Pa.) managed two more runs during its last at-bat, before suffering a 15-6 loss.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE

Junior Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) led off with a single, before junior Teagan Piechnick (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) drew a walk. After Nicolia's sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, Colosi doubled home both to put the Golden Knights in front 2-1. Cardy then followed with an RBI single through the left side that scored Colosi for a 3-1 advantage.
  • California (Pa.) followed with one run in the fourth, two in the fifth and two in the sixth to jump back in front 6-3.
  • Gannon pulled within 6-5 after back-to-back RBI singles up the middle by Beach and Benack during the bottom of the sixth inning. The Golden Knights had the tying run in scoring position when a ground-out ended the threat.
