Gannon Baseball Team Drops Pair of Non-Conference Games at Malone

THE RUNDOWN

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team was unable to hold onto a four-run lead during the second game and fell for the second time Wednesday afternoon during a non-conference doubleheader at Malone University. The Pioneers posted the twinbill sweep by scores of 9-0 and 7-5.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Malone scored the only runs it would eventually need during the first inning, crossing the plate three times with three hits.
  • The Pioneers accounted for the game's only scoring with four more runs during the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the fifth inning.
  • Gannon managed only four hits and never advanced a runner past first base throughout the entire game.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) recorded two of Gannon's four hits.
  • Redshirt senior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) and freshman Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) had one hit each.
  • Junior Jason Beaumont (Tallmadge, Ohio/Tallmadge) received the starting nod on the mound, logging four innings.
  • Freshman Brandon Weber (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) took care of the final two innings.

  • Gannon is among others receiving votes in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Region Poll.
  • The Golden Knights were shut out for the first time since a 7-0 loss to Mercyhurst on April 10, 2016 at McConnell Family Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • The second pitch of the nightcap produced Gannon's first run of the afternoon after junior Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) blasted a lead-off home run to right field.
  • Malone tied the contest during the bottom of the second inning.
  • After a scoreless frame, Gannon erupted with four two-out runs during the top of the fourth inning. The Golden Knights loaded the bases with back-to-back singles by sophomore Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and O'Shei before Benack walked. Senior Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) followed with a bases-clearing double to right center field. An RBI single through the right side by Cox then drove home Wagner to push the visitors in front 5-1.
  • The lead was short-lived as Malone immediately responded with four runs of its own during the bottom of the inning.
  • The Pioneers assumed their first lead of the game with the go-ahead run during the bottom of the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth.
  • Meanwhile, Gannon managed only one base runner during the final three innings, before falling by a 7-5 count.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • The top eight batters in the line-up recorded hits.
  • Five of Gannon's 11 hits came from the first two batters.
  • Wagner finished 3-for-4 with one run and three RBIs.
  • Benack went 2-for-3 with one walk, two runs and one RBI out of the lead-off spot.
  • Sophomore Ty Phelps (Pomeroy, Ohio/Meigs) opened the game on the mound, logging 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) followed with 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit.
  • Redshirt junior Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) finished the rotation by pitching the sixth inning.
