Gannon Baseball Team Concludes Florida Trip with 22 Runs and a Sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan

  • The Short Story: The Gannon baseball team pounded out 23 hits while scoring 22 runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of regional foe West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday afternoon during the final day of the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon jumped on West Virginia Wesleyan early with three runs during its first at-bat. The Golden Knights loaded the bases on a lead-off single by junior Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and consecutive hit by pitches. A walk to junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) pushed the first run across the plate. Junior Mike Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) followed with an infield single that drove home the second run, before a throwing error allowed the third run to score.
  • Junior Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) manufactured a run during the second inning. He led off the frame with a single to center field, moved to third on two wild pitches and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit).
  • Gannon's lead increased to 6-0 with a pair of runs during the top of the fourth inning. Junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) drove in redshirt freshman Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) with an RBI triple and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • The fourth-inning formula was similar to the second. Senior Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) led off with a single to center field, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and scored on consecutive singles by Nicolia and senior Jacob Suppa (Erie, Pa./McDowell).
  • West Virginia Wesleyan was able to make it interesting with three unearned runs during the bottom of the sixth inning, but was unable to get any closer during Gannon's 7-3 victory.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Colosi and Nicolia recorded two hits each.
  • Both Suppa and redshirt senior Anthony Grimone (Emporium, Pa./Cameron County) produced hits in relief roles.
  • Redshirt senior Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) went the distance on the mound, allowing no earned runs on five hits. He struck out five and walked one.

  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.
  • The Golden Knights were predicted to finish third in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division according to the league's preseason coaches poll.
  • Cox extended his hit streak to 17 games dating back to last season with his fourth-inning triple.
  • Jackson moved into a tie with Josh Leslie (2002-06) for third place all-time at Gannon since 2000 with his 16th career complete game.
  • Cox moved into a tie with Matt Brickman (2001-03) for third place all-time at Gannon with his ninth career triple.
  • Jackson moved past current assistant coach Evan Euler (2007-10) and into Gannon's all-time top five since 2000 with 189 career innings pitched.
  • Nicolia and Colosi recorded their fourth and third multiple-hit games of the season, respectively.
  • Benack extended his hit streak to 12 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • West Virginia Wesleyan scored once during its first at-bat, but Gannon quickly countered with five runs of its own during the bottom half of the opening frame.
  • Freshman Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge) started the outburst with an RBI double. Beach followed with a two-run double to right field. Freshman Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) later capped the inning with another two-run double for a 5-1 lead.
  • Gannon hitters continued to provide pressure with a three-run spot during the second inning. The runs scored on a single by redshirt sophomore Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin), an RBI ground-out by Beach and a wild pitch.
  • The Golden Knights expanded their lead to 10-1 with two more runs during the bottom of the third inning. After two walks to begin the frame, Quiceno had an RBI single to right field and Beach connected on an RBI double to center field.
  • The offense didn't stop as another four runs came across the plate during the bottom of the fifth inning. Grimone and Callaway started the scoring with back-to-back RBI ground-outs. Restuccia and junior Joey DiBridge (Irwin, Pa./Hempfield Area) added RBI singles, before an RBI double by O'Shei put the score at 14-1 after five innings.
  • Gannon tacked on one more run during the sixth inning when Grimone's sacrifice fly drove home Wagner with the game's final tally.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Ten different Golden Knights recorded a hit, including eight of the nine starters.
  • Wagner, Quiceno, Beach and O'Shei had two hits each.
  • Beach and O'Shei finished with four and three RBIs, respectively.
  • Wagner went 2-for-4 with five runs scored.
  • Seven different Golden Knights scored, including four multiple times.
  • Sophomore Jarod Morrison (Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton) improved to 2-0 with five innings of work, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.
  • Sophomore Matthew Yough (Chicora, Pa./Karns City) tossed two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
