Gannon Baseball Team Splits Twinbill with Tiffin at Russ-Matt Invitational

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: Tiffin 7, Gannon 3

  • The Short Story: Redshirt junior Ryan Vargo (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview) struck out a career-high eight hitters while tossing a complete game during a 5-3 victory in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Tiffin Thursday afternoon at the Russ-Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Florida. The win gave the Golden Knights a twinbill split after dropping the opener by a 7-3 score.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Tiffin jumped out to a 7-0 lead after its first four at-bats with two runs during the second inning, four in the third and one in the fourth.
  • Gannon scored its first run during the bottom of the fifth inning. Junior Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) drew a lead-off walk. Two outs later, the Golden Knights loaded the bases after redshirt freshman Jared Beach (McDonald, Pa./Canon-McMillan) singled and redshirt sophomore Nate Cardy (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) was hit by a pitch. Junior Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) then singled to left field, scoring Nicolia.
  • The Golden Knights added single runs during the sixth and seventh innings. Junior Cody Callaway (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) led off the sixth inning with a single and scored on a two-out single to center field by senior Andrew Wagner (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit).
  • The run sequence in the seventh was started once again by the lead-off hitter getting on. This time it was Beach doubling to right field. Cardy followed with an RBI single to left field, but the Golden Knights couldn't get any closer during a 7-3 loss.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Seven of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • Beach led the offensive attack with his first two career hits and scoring once.
  • Junior Joey Colosi (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) suffered the loss on the mound despite striking out four in three innings.
  • Sophomore Cory Hegedus (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) tossed two scoreless innings of relief work during collegiate debut.

  • Gannon is ranked seventh in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Atlantic Regional Poll.

  • Gannon suffered its first loss in five games at the Russ-Matt Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • Both teams hit the ball early, scoring two runs apiece during the first inning.
  • Gannon took the first swing. Wagner singled and Beach walked during the top of the first inning, before moving up 90 feet due to a wild pitch. The duo then scored on freshman Elijah Quiceno (Berryville, Va./Stonebridge)'s two-out single to left field.
  • Tiffin countered with two runs of its own during the bottom of the inning to tie the contest at two.
  • Gannon regained the lead 3-2 during the top of the fourth inning after a hit by pitch, wild pitch and RBI triple by sophomore Dominic Mori (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area).
  • The Golden Knights extended their lead to 5-2 with a pair of runs during the top of the fifth inning. Four consecutive hitters reached after two quick outs. RBI singles by Quiceno and freshman Austin O'Shei (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) pushed the runs across.
  • Tiffin fought for one more run during the bottom of the fifth inning, but Vargo shut the door with scoreless sixth and seventh innings.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Six of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.
  • Quiceno topped the Gannon hitters with two hits and three RBIs in three at-bats.
  • Wagner finished 2-for-4 with one run.
  • Beach touched home plate twice after drawing walks.
  • Vargo was in command after the first inning, picking up his first career victory with his first career complete game and a career-high eight strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs and walked only one.
