ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team is tabbed fourth in the initial NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released this week.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the NCAA Tournament participants at the end of the season. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and Mountain East Conference (MEC) champions receive automatic bids. The top four remaining teams in the final regional rankings will receive at-large bids.
The previous regional rankings released by the United Soccer Coaches have no bearing on postseason bids.
West Virginia Wesleyan is the region's top-ranked team with 13-0-1 record overall and within the region. All records are through Sunday, October 15. Kutztown (13-1, 13-1), West Chester (10-2-1, 10-2-1), Gannon (9-2-2, 9-2-2) and East Stroudsburg (9-3-2, 9-3-2) completed the top five.
Slippery Rock (9-4-1, 9-4-1), Notre Dame (Ohio) (9-3-2, 9-3-2) and Seton Hill (10-4-1, 10-4-1) rounded out the top eight.
The top two seeds at the end of the season will host three-team subregionals that include first- and second-round matches. The subregional hosts will receive first-round byes, before playing the winner of the first-round match-up.
Gannon moved to 10-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 within the PSAC with a 5-1 victory against Mansfield Wednesday night at McConnell Family Stadium. The result was not considered for this week's regional rankings. The victory enabled the Lady Knights to remain undefeated in seven home matches this season.
