Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Comes Up Shy Twice During First Day of Fluid Five

  • The Short Story: The Gannon women's water polo team opened the Fluid Five hosted by No. 16 Indiana University with a pair of setbacks against Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) rivals Sonoma State (17-6) and Cal State East Bay (18-7).

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH ONE
  • The two clubs split the first four goals. Senior Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore Alison Cooney (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) accounted for Gannon's two scores during the opening five minutes.
  • Sonoma State then exploded for six consecutive goals to assume an 8-2 lead with 5:43 left in the first half.
  • Junior Kayla Villano (Schnecksville, Pa./Milford) was able to slow the momentum with two tallies as the two programs split the final four goals of the first half, before Sonoma State took a 10-4 advantage into the intermission.
  • Gannon appeared to get right back into the contest with two of the first three goals after the break. Consecutive scores from Lazenby brought the Lady Knights within 11-6 midway through the third quarter.
  • However, Sonoma State scored the final six goals while holding Gannon scoreless for the final 12 minutes and 47 seconds to secure a 17-6 victory.

MATCH NOTES
  • Lazenby led the Gannon scoring attack with three goals.
  • Villano added a pair of scores.
  • Cooney completed the scoring with one goal.
  • Senior Rachel Bednarek (Windermere, Fla./Olympia) and sophomore Liz Barr (Honolulu, Hawaii/'Iolani School) recorded four steals each.
  • Junior Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) started her 11th consecutive match in goal, making two saves and surrendering six scores in nine minutes and 15 seconds of action.
  • Freshman Isabelle Vieira (Erie, Pa. / Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy) saw 22 minutes and 45 seconds of relief playing time, turning away five shots and allowing 10 goals.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Cooney continued her streak of scoring a goal during each of the first 11 matches this season.
  • Lazenby recorded her second hat trick of the season and scored multiple goals for the third time.
  • Villano netted multiple scores in a match for the first time this season.
  • Vieira logged her most minutes in goal this season, falling one save shy of her season-high.

HOW IT HAPPENED - MATCH TWO
  • After an early Cal State East Bay goal, Cooney knotted the match at one with an unassisted tally at the 4:59 mark.
  • Cal State East Bay countered with six consecutive goals for a 7-1 lead.
  • Gannon managed to stem the tide with two of the final three scores of the first half. Lazenby produced the first, before Cooney's goal with 11 seconds remaining pushed the Lady Knights into the halftime break with an 8-3 deficit.
  • Cal State East Bay opened the second half by blankingGannon 4-0 during the third quarter and entered the final eight minutes with a 12-3 advantage.
  • After Lazenby scored 1:49 into the final quarter, Cal State East Bay ripped off another four goals for a 16-4 lead.
  • A tally by Barr and pair of Cooney scores helped Gannon generate a 3-2 scoring edge during the final 3:23, before suffering an 18-7 loss.
