GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Gannon scored immediately during the top of the first inning on singles by freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) and junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville).
  • St. Joseph's (Ind.) tied the game with a run in the second inning and forged ahead with another tally in the bottom of the fifth inning.
  • Gannon quickly responded with the decisive two runs during the top of the sixth inning. The Golden Knights loaded the bases with consecutive singles from Bellanca and freshman Kyle Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) in front of an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
  • One out later, senior Sean Sutton's (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College) fielder's choice scored Kyle Cox with the tying run. Freshman Gregory Nicolia (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Aaron Cox with the winning run.
  • Freshman David Cricks (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) set down St. Joseph's (Ind.) in order during the bottom of the sixth inning and induced a game-ending double play to end the seventh.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • All seven of Gannon's hits came from the top six hitters in the lineup.
  • Bellanca was the lone Golden Knight with multiple hits, going 2-of-3 from the third spot.
  • Cricks improved to 2-0 with his first career complete game, allowing one earned run. He struck out two and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bellanca recorded his second multiple-hit game of the season.
  • Cricks lowered his ERA to 0.63 through 14 1/3 innings this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • St. Joseph's controlled the early portion of the game, jumping out a 3-0 lead with two runs during the first inning and one during the third frame.
  • Gannon got close with a two-run fifth inning. The Golden Knights scored the first run with an error, single and passed ball. Redshirt junior Mark DeVita's (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) two-out single scored senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) with the second tally.
  • Head coach Nate Cocolin's club then pulled off the first walk-off of the season. Gannon loaded the bases with an error, a single by Lewandowski and a walk to Benack. Sutton pushed Aaron Cox across the plate with the game-tying run after drawing a walk. DeVita then scored Lewandowski with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Lewandowski accounted for half of Gannon's four hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs.
  • Devita finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
  • Kyle Cox started on the mound, but received a no-decision after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked two.
  • Sophomore Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. He didn't allow a hit, striking out one and walking one.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • DiPaolo earned his first career victory in his third career appearance.
  • Lewandowski recorded his fourth multiple-hit game, sitting one behind junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) for the team lead.
  • Gannon produced its second sweep in the last three doubleheaders.
  • The Golden Knights ended their spring trip with an 8-6 mark, resulting in the same 14-game record twice in the last three seasons.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon will be idle for five days, before opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play next weekend.
  • The Golden Knights are scheduled to begin a four-game series against Pitt-Johnstown Friday, March 13 with a doubleheader on the road. The home opener is slated for Saturday, March 14 against the Mountain Cats. First pitch both days is set for 1 p.m.
  • UPJ swept a season-ending four-game series from Gannon last year during its first season as a member of the PSAC.
