GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Both teams scored during the first inning for the third consecutive game of the series. Gannon drew first blood with two runs during the top of the first inning. Junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) led off the game with a single to right center. After redshirt junior Mark DeVita (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) replaced Wiesen on the base paths, redshirt senior Jeff Bellanca (Grand Island, N.Y./St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute) drilled a two-run homer to left field.
  • California (Pa.) immediately responded with three runs during the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly and two-run double.
  • Gannon tied the contest at three during the top of the second inning. Freshman Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) reached on an error and scored after back-to-back singles by freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) and senior Sean Sutton (Toronto, Ontario/Brebeuf College).
  • California (Pa.) answered with another three-run inning during their second at-bat. The last two runs were unearned after an error with two outs extended the inning.
  • Gannon scored its final run of the contest during the top of the fourth inning. Sutton reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Wiesen's two-out single to center field.
  • Cal countered yet again with a single run during its turn in the fourth, before adding a pair of insurance runs during the fifth inning.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Bellanca and Wiesen accounted for half of Gannon's hits with two safeties each.
  • Bellanca went 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs.
  • Wiesen finished 2-for-4 with one RBI in the lead-off spot.
  • Six of Gannon's nine starters recorded a hit.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Bellanca's home run was the first of his collegiate career.
  • Wiesen produced his team-best 10th multiple-hit performance of the season.
  • Bellanca recorded his fifth multiple-hit game of the season, tying him for second on the team. He had a career-high two RBIs for the third time this season and eighth time during his career.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • California (Pa.) appeared to put the game away with four runs during the first inning and two more in the third to assume a 6-1 lead.
  • Gannon's only run during that time span came during the top of the third inning without a hit. The Golden Knights loaded the bases with a pair of walks and a hit by pitch, before Benack's sacrifice fly scored Oruch.
  • The game got interesting when Gannon produced four runs during the top of the fourth inning with only two hits. With two outs, senior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) drew a walk and scored on DeVita's triple to right center.
  • After Oruch walked on five pitches, Sutton's three-run blast to left field brought the Golden Knights within 6-5.
  • The score remained that way until the fireworks during the last inning.
  • After two quick outs, Gannon tied the game with three consecutive hits. Freshman Ross Dirienzo (Somerset, Pa./Somerset) ignited the rally with a single to left field. He went to third base on Wiesen's single to left field and scored the tying run on Benack's single to right field.
  • California mirrored Gannon's two-out lightning during its turn in the seventh. The Vulcans had runners on second and third with two outs. A hit by pitch then loaded the bases, before Danny McGrath's walk-off single through the right side ended the contest.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Five different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Sutton recorded three RBIs while Benack drove home two runs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Sutton's home run was his first of the season and second during his two-year career at Gannon.
  • Benack had multiple RBIs in a game for the third time this season.
  • Sutton's three RBIs were one shy of his career-high set against Ashland on March 3, 2014.
  • Oruch scored multiple times for the second time this season, falling one shy of his season-high set against Grand Valley State on March 2.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon returns to non-conference action Wednesday, March 25 against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) member Lake Erie at Gannon University Field. The doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
  • The two clubs will attempt to play for the third time after inclement weather postponed the first two tries.
  • Gannon and Lake Erie will meet for the first time since playing a four-game set in Painesville, Ohio April 17-18, 2010. Gannon swept the first doubleheader of that series, before Lake Erie captured the final two games.
