Gannon Baseball Team Allows Only Three Earned Runs During Doubleheader Loss

THE RUNDOWN
  • Game One Score: No. 21 Mercyhurst 5, at Gannon 2
  • Game Two Score: No. 21 Mercyhurst 3, at Gannon 1
  • Records: Gannon (10-14, 2-8 PSAC West), Mercyhurst (17-1, 9-1 PSAC West)
  • Location: Erie, Pa. - Gannon University Field
  • The Short Story: The Gannon pitching staff limited No. 21 Mercyhurst to three earned run in two games, but still dropped both ends of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at a sun-drenched Gannon University Field. The Lakers earned the sweep by scores of 5-2 and 3-1.

GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER
HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE
  • Mercyhurst opened the scoring with three runs during the top of the third inning. The Lakers put runners on the corners after a ball up the middle hit off an infielder's glove. A single to center field later scored both runners, before a ball dropped into left field to plate the third run.
  • The visitors added unearned runs during the fifth and seventh innings, increasing their lead to 5-0.
  • Gannon tried to rally during its last at-bat. Senior Eric Lewandowski (Souderton, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) drew a lead-off walk. One out later, freshman Matt Oruch (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) singled up the middle and a wild pitch pushed both runners to second and third. Junior Jared Wiesen (Girard, Ohio/Liberty) followed with a two-out, two-run double down the leftfield line.
  • A hit by pitch brought the tying run to the plate, but Mercyhurst's Jake Hall ended the threat with a strikeout.

GAME NOTES - GAME ONE
  • Five different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Junior Aaron Cox (Dorchester, N.J./Millville) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs in six innings. He struck out six and walked none.
  • Sophomore Nico DiPaolo (Bridgeville, Pa./Bishop Canevin) logged the seventh inning, surrendering an unearned run with one strikeout.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Wiesen recorded his third multiple-RBI game of the season.
  • DiPaolo made his first appearance since throwing two scoreless innings during a 4-3 victory against St. Joseph's (Ind.) on March 7.
  • Gannon committed four errors for the second consecutive game and third time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO
  • After four scoreless innings, Mercyhurst put its leadoff batter in the fifth on due to a misplayed grounder that later led to the first two runs.
  • The Lakers added a third unearned run during the sixth inning when Gannon dropped a pop-up that would have ended the inning.
  • Gannon returned the run during its half of the sixth inning. Sophomore Nick Restuccia (Ormond Beach, Fla./Father Lopez Catholic) led off with a triple down the right field line. The Mercyhurst outfielder initially went back on the ball, before coming on for a diving attempt. The ball bounced past the outfielder as Restuccia raced to third base.
  • Freshman Charles Benack (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) singled to left field one out later, cutting the deficit to 3-1.
  • Neither team scored during their final at-bats, before Mercyhurst completed the doubleheader sweep with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh inning.

GAME NOTES - GAME TWO
  • Four different Golden Knights recorded a hit.
  • Redshirt sophomore Aaron Jackson (Sugar Grove, Pa./Eisenhower) went the distance on the mound, allowing three unearned runs on six hits. He struck out two and walked none.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • Jackson recorded his third complete game of the season and eighth of his two-year collegiate career.
  • Restuccia recorded his first career triple during the sixth inning and scored his first run since the season opener at Limestone (S.C.) on February 7.
  • Gannon's earned run in the sixth inning was the first against Mercyhurst's Jon Klein this season. He had opened the campaign without allowing an earned run in 23 1/3 innings.
  • The Golden Knights struck out 12 times, including nine times looking.
  • Gannon lost for the first time in nine games when holding an opponent to three runs or less this season.

UP NEXT
  • Gannon concludes its four-game series against rival Mercyhurst Monday, March 30 at the Mercyhurst Baseball Field.
  • The PSAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
