Gannon Women’s Water Polo Opens Hartwick Tournament with Loss to No. 14 Indiana; Bounces Back Against St. Francis (N.Y.)

Senior Katelyn Jacobs scored five goals in the Lady Knights' 16-10 win over St. Francis (N.Y.) to compile her 151st career goal.
ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Gannon women's water polo earned a split against the No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers and St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers to open the Hartwick Tournament Saturday at Moyer Pool. The Lady Knights dropped a 22-3 decision to the No. 14 Hoosiers in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) action to open the two-day event. In the second game, the Lady Knights bounced back with a 16-10 win over the Terriers. The Lady Knights moved to 10-9 overall, as the Hoosiers improved to 13-5 and the Terriers fell to 4-12.

To open game one of the Hartwick Tournament, No. 14 Indiana stormed out to an 11-0 lead by the end of the opening quarter. The two teams exchanged these goals in the second quarter before the Hoosiers tallied eight unanswered goals to close the match.

Senior Bailey Gadd (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) scored all three Lady Knight goals.

Freshman goalkeeper Emily Rodriguez (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) recorded five blocks in the loss.

The Lady Knights bounced back in game two with a 16-10 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.).  To open the first quarter, the Lady Knights secured a 6-2 lead. The Terriers pulled within two of the Lady Knights' lead heading into the break, 9-6. The Lady Knights extended their lead to 11-7 before pulling away in the final quarter with five goals for the 16-10 win.

Senior leading scorer Katelyn Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) erupted for five goals in the Lady Knights' win, bringing her season total to 30 and her career total to 151. Junior Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) tallied three goals, while Gadd, sophomore Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and senior Kelsey Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) recorded a pair of goals each. Sophomore Rachel Bednarek (Windermere, Fla./Olympia) and freshman Christine Uht (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) each added a score.

Rodriguez registered six blocks in her tenth win this season.  

The Lady Knights return to action at the Hartwick Tournament April 6 at Moyer Pool for three matches. The Lady Knights face Notre Dame (Ohio) at 9 a.m. followed by the host Hawks at noon and Marist at 3 p.m.
