ERIE, Pa. - The No. 5 Gannon Lady Knights hosts Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West Division opponent Clarion in the regular-season home finale on Wednesday evening at the Hammermill Center with a 5:30 p.m. tip. With a first-round bye and home quarterfinal secured in the PSAC Tournament, the Lady Knights remain second in the division at 12-2. Tied for sixth in the division with a 4-9 record, the Golden Eagles are in the hunt for the sixth spot in the PSAC Tournament. The evening will mark Senior Night for seniors Jen Papich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) and redshirt junior Doriyon Glass (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman).
TICKETS
Ticket windows will open at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday's contests will be part of PSAC-crossover doubleheaders that begin with the women's teams at 5:30 p.m. A ticket for the doubleheader costs $5 for adults and $3 for non-Gannon students and senior citizens. All Gannon students are admitted free of charge by showing their school ID at the front door. Tickets can also now be purchased in advance online at www.gusportstickets.com.
SENIOR NIGHT
It will be Senior Night Wednesday as Gannon plans to honor seven student-athletes during the men's pre-game. The warm-up clock will be stopped with seven minutes remaining to begin Senior Night festivities. The women's team will be represented by Glass, Papich and Sundberg. The men's senior class includes Brandon Emmitt, Rogerio Livramento, Jabs Newby and C.J. Oldham.
SCOUTING THE CLARION GOLDEN EAGLES
- Holding a 4-9 record in divisional play, Clarion is tied for the sixth spot in the PSAC West Division along with Mercyhurst. Upon returning to divisional play after the PSAC Crossover portion of its schedule, Clarion dropped five straight in divisional play to set them back in the conference post-season race.
- In recent action, California (Pa.) snapped the host Golden Eagles' two-game win streak with a 66-53 victory. An 18-4 Vulcan's run halfway through the opening half set the pace for the rest of the contest. Hannah Heeter led the Golden Eagles with her ninth straight double-double of the season off 15 points and 17 rebounds.Â
- On Jan. 11, the-then No. 2 Gannon Lady Knights defeated the Golden Eagles, 68-47, at the Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. The Lady Knights captured the early lead with 16:13 remaining in the contest and held onto it for the rest of the game.
- Three Golden Eagles are averaging double digits this season. Compiling 13 double-doubles this season, Heeter leads the Golden Eagles at a pace of 14.2 points per game followed by Kelly Johnson at 13.7 and Emma Fickel at 12.0 points. Heeter is also averaging 12.1 rebounds per contest.
- Among the PSAC, the Golden Eagles rank 10th in scoring offense (68.6) and 12th in scoring defense (72.2). The Golden Eagles are fifth in field goal percentage (.428) and ninth in field goal percentage defense (.411).
- Head coach Gie Parsons is in her 25th season at Clarion. The Slippery Rock graduate holds a 351-
334 record during her time with the Golden Eagles, winning five PSAC West titles en route to three conference crowns.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Lady Knights hold a 30-14 lead in the all-time series with Clarion, winning 13 consecutive games.
- On home court, the Lady Knights have won six straight against the Golden Eagles, posting a 14-6 record.
- Since joining the PSAC, the Lady Knights are 11-0 versus Clarion, sweeping all five regular-season series.
LAST TIME OUT
Following its second loss of the season, the No. 3 Gannon women's basketball team bounced back with a 73-64 win over PSAC West Division opponent Indiana (Pa.), 73-64, in front of a record of 1,233 at the Kovalchick Complex on Feb. 15. In the win, the Lady Knights clinched a first-round bye and quarterfinal home game in the PSAC Tournament. For the fourth game this season, four Lady Knights reached double figures. Papich led the Lady Knights with 14 points, pulling in a game-high nine rebounds. Sundberg tied a career game-high 13 points, shooting 4-for-4 from the field and 5-for-6 from the foul line. The Lady Knights shot 55.3 percent from the field (26-47), shooting over 50 percent in each half. After shooting 1-for-6 from behind the arc in the opening half, the Lady Knights buried 4-for-7 in the second half. The Lady Knights overcame its largest deficit in a victory this season, falling behind to the Crimson Hawks by 13 with 7:53 left in the first half.
COACHING REUNION
Head coach Jim Brunelli and assistant coach Mike Whitling each started their started their coaching careers with Clarion head coach Gie Parsons. Brunelli began his coaching career with the Golden Eagles, as a graduate assistant from 1998-2000. Brunelli also obtained his bachelor's degree from Clarion in 1996, playing for the Golden Eagles in 1993-94. Whitling also received his start in the coaching ranks at Clarion, serving as a graduate assistant from 2005-08.
LOOKING AHEAD
The No. 5 Gannon Lady Knights conclude the regular season on the road at Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. Holding a 6-7 divisional mark in its first season in the PSAC, Pitt-Johnstown is currently tied for fourth with Indiana (Pa.). Winners of two straight, the Lady Cats travel to California (Pa.) on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. The Lady Cats hold a 22-2 all-time series record agains the Lady Knights. After 10 years passed, the Lady Knights and Cats finally hit the hardwood on Jan. 22, as Gannon captured an 86-47 victory. The win marked Brunelli's 100th career victory.
