Gannon Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Swept by Cleveland State

CLEVELAND, Ohio - For the second straight week, the Gannon men's and women's swimming and diving teams faced a NCAA Division I opponent taking on Cleveland State at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Friday evening. The host Vikings completed a sweep of the Golden Knights and Lady Knights, capturing a 158.5-59.5 win on the men's side and a 162-55 victory on the women's side. The Golden Knights fall to 3-5 overall and the No. 25 Lady Knights slide to 7-4 on the season.

The 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Samantha Favret (Watertown, N.Y. / Watertown), freshman Gabrielle Borza (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny), sophomore Madeline Summers (Lake Stevens, Wash. / Lake Stevens) and sophomore Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio / Cuyahoga Falls) captured second place (4:03.84) to open the evening.

Borza landed the Lady Knights' lone top-finish with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying time, capturing first (2:29.53) in the 200-yard breaststroke. Lydic secured a pair of PSAC-qualifying times, placing third (53.95) in 100-yard freestyle and third (1:57.78) in the 200-yard freestyle.

Summers also earned a pair of conference standards. The sophomore captured second (2:13.15) in the 200-yard butterfly and third (25.14) in the 50-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Emily Nottingham (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) placed fourth (25.23) in the 50-yard freestyle and fourth (55.48) in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Abigail Wu (Milford, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) was the runner-up (2:18.28) in the 200-yard backstroke. Junior Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) posted a third-place finish (11:14.29) in the 1000-yard freestyle.

To open the men's individual races, sophomore Denys Fedrochenko (Zaborizhia, Ukraine) captured first (9:40.12) in the 1000-yard freestyle with a PSAC-qualifying time, missing out on a NCAA B time by five seconds. Three additional Golden Knights secured conference standards in the race including sophomore Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) in third (10:01.66), freshman Drew Wolter (Clarksville, Md./Atholton) in fourth (10:01.85) and Tommy Herman in sixth (10:23.48).

With a pair of conference standards, junior Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) finished tied for second (21.95) in the 50-yard freestyle and second (47.50) in the 100-yard freestyle.

Fedrochenko nabbed his second top-finish of the evening with a PSAC-qualifying time, taking first (1:56.05) in the 200-yard backstroke. Wolter earned his second conference standard, placing second (4:50.29) in the 500-yard freestyle.

Gannon returns to action at the Crimson Hawk Dual Challenge on the campus of Indiana (Pa.) at the Pidgeon Natatorium Jan. 31-Feb.1. The Challenge will be an all-day event.
