GENEVA, Ohio – The Gannon women's water polo team opened the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division Championship hosted by the SPIRE Institute Saturday with an 11-5 victory against Notre Dame (Ohio), before dropping consecutive decisions to nationally-ranked teams.
Saturday's action concluded with an 18-2 loss to No. 16 Hartwick and a 16-5 setback against No. 15 Indiana University. Gannon's showing on the first day pushed the Lady Knights into the CWPA Western Division Championship third-place match Sunday, April 14 against No. 18 Michigan at 10 a.m.
In the opener, both Gannon and Notre Dame scored twice during the first quarter. The Lady Knights then out-scored the Falcons 4-1 during the second frame to assume a 6-3 halftime lead. A 4-0 whitewashing during the third extended the lead to 10-3, before Notre Dame scored two of the fourth quarter's three goals.
Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led the Gannon offensive attack with four goals.
Kelly Steininger (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) also recorded a hat trick with three scores.
Kelsey Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had two goals.
Katelyn Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) and
Bailey Gadd (Golden, Colo./Lakewood) chipped in one tally each.
Janelle Bartman (Darien, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) turned away 12 shots in front of the net.
Sixteen-ranked Hartwick took control of the middle match early, shutting out Gannon 8-0 during the first quarter. The Hawks extended their lead to 14-1 at halftime and 16-1 after three quarters.
Adelee Choban (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and
Tricia Gajewski (Fairview, Pa./Fairview) produced Gannon's only two goals. Bartman recorded six saves between the pipes.
In the nightcap, No. 15 Indiana University rattled off five goals during each of the first two quarters to assume a 5-2 lead after one frame and a 10-2 advantage at the break. The Hoosiers increased their lead to 13-4 after third quarters, before out-scoring Gannon 3-1 during the final eight minutes.
Five different Lady Knights scored against Indiana. Jacobs, McDaniels, Rzymek, Steininger and Gadd had one goal each. Bartman ended the busy day with nine blocks.
Gannon, ranked 10th in the latest CWP Division I/II Poll, moved to 10-13 overall with its 1-2 day. Notre Dame (Ohio) dropped to 5-10. Hartwick improved to 28-10 while Indiana raised its record to 18-12.
